Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #184
Ultimate Spider-Man #150 — Writer: Brian Michael Bendis; Art: Various, including David Lafuente, Sara Pichelli, Joelle Jones, Jamie McKelvie and Scottie Young … and that’s just the major artists; the backup story has a couple of pages each from, among others, Alex Maleev, Dan Brereton, John Romita Senior, Frank Cho, Jim Mahfood, Craig Thompson (!), James Kolchalka (!!), and another dozen or more people. That adds up to 96 pages of story and art, so the $6 cover price isn’t that bad — and, as a celebration of the best mainstream superhero comic of the ’00s (yep, the first issue … Continue reading

Do you ever just get really sick and tired of reviewing comics? Cause I don’t! Let’s do this! My Top Five (The Five Best Comics of the Week) Secret Avengers #5 Writer: Ed Brubaker Artists: Michael Lark and David Aja What do you do when your superstar artist takes an issue off? You bring in two of the sweetest possibly fill-in artists to come and do the job. Both Aja (Iron Fist) and Lark (Daredevil & Gotham Central) have worked with Brubaker before, and they pick up right where they left off in terms of quality. An absolutely fascinating back-story … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #179
Love and Rockets : New Stories #3 — Creators: Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez The disadvantage of this being a once-a-year, $15 trade, instead of a series of smaller issues, is that it’s easy to miss — I didn’t see it at all Wednesday, and only knew about it because I read one or two online mentions of it. Fortunately, copies are still available, because no serious comics fan should have do without a Hernandez Bros. fix. Gilbert offers two connected stories: one of those Z-grade exploitation movies, like Speak of the Devil, that he likes to play around with (this one … Continue reading

Welcome back to the internet’s most exhausted reviews! If you see the quality dipping I’ll blame it on the school semester, and we’ll see if Phil bans me from ever writing blog posts again. Let’s do this: My Top Five (The Five Best Comics of the Week) Secret Warriors #19 Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist: Alessandro Vitti Secret Warriors is quickly becoming one of Marvel’s most fascinating works. Month in and month out, Hickman delivers great action, drama, and ideas. This time it’s probably the most powerful in the positioning of the Howling Commandos reunion juxtaposed with the death of many … Continue reading

After some much needed post-San Diego Comic-Con rest, I’m back for a HUGE week of comics. Lots to talk about, and plenty to say, so here we go! My Top Five (The Five Best Comics of the Week) Time Lincoln: Fists of Fuhrer #1 Writer/Artist: Fred Perry I cannot stress this enough: Time Lincoln is awesome. If you have any problems with Abraham Lincoln firing a laser gun at winged nazis to help get Ben Franklin to save Albert Einstein, then we can’t be friends. To think that this is one guy doing all the work (both story and art) is … Continue reading
