Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #266

All-New Marvel Now! Point One #1 — Creators: Various This is a series of eight-page stories involving five new Marvel launches — Silver Surfer, Ms. Marvel, The Invaders, Black Widow and Avengers World — meant to showcase those books’ creative teams and tempt readers into buying the comics; the stories are all woven together with a quest by Loki, who’s also headlining a new title: Loki, Agent of Asgard. Points here for making each episode a brand-new story, and not just a reprint of pages from the various first issues — but points off for charging readers $6 for the … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #82 by Dan!

All right folks, we’re back in action. Lots of stuff to talk about so let’s do this! Chin Music #2 Writer: Steve Niles Artist: Tony Harris Chin Music is a really hard book to review. On the one hand, you know exactly what you’re getting with the creators, but on the other hand, you don’t know where it’s going to go. I heard it described as “supernatural mob justice” and that’s about the best description I could put on it. Someone has murdered Al Capone, and Elliot Ness is very suspicious of the circumstances. This issue really gets more into … Continue reading

All right folks, lots of stuff this week, so let’s do this! Age of Ultron #8 Writer: Brian Bendis Artist: Brandon Peterson I just can’t get into this. I can’t explain why, I’m a huge fan of time travel, I love the high-concept stories, and I want to like the entire idea behind this, but it just feels like Bendis is trying to push a redone version of House of M at us, and I can’t get into it. Add the fact that Peterson seems wickedly rushed making his faces look crazy, and that everything has been building to a … Continue reading

All right folks, this week I’m going to try to talk about a couple books I haven’t really said much about. Here’s hoping it won’t become a rambling mess. But don’t worry, I’ll still complain about Captain America near the end. Let’s do this! Cable and X-Force #6 Writer: Dennis Hopeless Artist: Salvador Larroca This book started a bit slowly, but seems to have really figured itself out. Most recently, Colossus had turned himself in after all that stuff with the Phoenix Force, so now the team hopes to break him out… or do they? Hopeless has put together a … Continue reading

All right folks, it’s a big week with lots of things worth noting, so why not check out some of the best (and possibly worst) of the week. Let’s do this! Deadpool #1 Writers: Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan Artist: Tony Moore This is a book full of political assassination jokes; do you need to know anything else? You do? Oh…Well, alt-comedian Posehn’s dark comedy style is clearly injected into this piece and that makes it surprisingly hilarious. Where Daniel Way was relying on the multiple narrators in Deadpool’s head to crack all the jokes, Posehn and Duggan put them … Continue reading
