Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #227

Everybody Loves Tank Girl #1 — Writer: Alan Martin;  Art: Jim Mahfood This gets first place this week because Mahfood (who has a big Phoenix connection, having attended ASU and drawn for New Times for a number of years) turns out to be a perfect artist for the ordinance-obsessed Australian riot grrl. With scripts by Martin, her original co-creator, all the characters “sound” right, and, given the typically tossed-off nature of the stories here, Mahfood’s knack for humor, cartoon violence and obsessively-detailed background bits adds just the right ingrediants. If Jamie Hewlitt stays too busy with the Gorillaz to draw … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #53 by Dan!

Oh man, bet you didn’t expect me to be back this soon, did you? Well here I am, so let’s do this! Mind MGMT #2 Writer/Artist: Matt Kindt This books makes my brain explode. You start with the cover’s hidden words, you read the story inside both covers, that hints at the ideas of the coming issue; you read the issue using the foreshadowing blue lines along the side, then you read the part of the second story that explains a bit more that might come around. THEN you read the letters page that shows more and the fake back … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #52 by Dan!

By having entry 52, this means I’ve been doing these reviews for 2 years. How times flies! I’d like to thank you all for reading and I’m sure you’d like to thank me for writing. Well, here’s some more writing for you to be reading (I’m just going in circles), Let’s do this! Manhattan Projects #4 Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist: Nick Pitarra While Hickman embraces subtlety and the slow burn in his other title, Secret, this book is where he really goes out of his mind. It’s like he had a bunch of pent-up ideas about creations and people and … Continue reading

The Latest and Mostly Greatest #46 by Dan!

Game on folks, let’s make this quick! I have a baseball game to go see! The Boys #65 Writer: Garth Ennis Artist: Russ Braun Holy moses.. this comic! Ennis took about six pages to explain everything you needed to know about the situation between Hughie, Black Noir, Homelander and Butcher. Six pages! And it all made perfect sense; it made we want to re-read 64 other issues, and it basically blew me away. Not to mention the fact that Russ Braun has really made his mark on this title. I’m still a bit bummed that Darick Robertson wasn’t around to … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #218

Saga #1 — Writer: Brian K. Vaughan;  Art: Fiona Staples Vaughan’s last extended series was Y: The Last Man, so he’s got a reputation to uphold, and this debut issue does so nicely: it’s a fantasy/Star Wars/Romeo and Juliet mashup, with all the sprawl its name implies — but this first issue focuses very tightly on just two characters, and the third one they produce. It’s very well done, and Staples brings enormous talent to the drawing: she’s just the kind of artist I admire, able to work with small human expressions and double-page city-destroying splashes (with giant turtles added!) … Continue reading
