Tank Girl #1

Everybody Loves Tank Girl #1 — Writer: Alan Martin;  Art: Jim Mahfood This gets first place this week because Mahfood (who has a big Phoenix connection, having attended ASU and drawn for New Times for a number of years) turns out to be a perfect artist for the ordinance-obsessed Australian riot grrl. With scripts by Martin, her original co-creator, all the characters “sound” right, and, given the typically tossed-off nature of the stories here, Mahfood’s knack for humor, cartoon violence and obsessively-detailed background bits adds just the right ingrediants. If Jamie Hewlitt stays too busy with the Gorillaz to draw … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #35 by Dan

Uncanny-X-Men-1

Oh no! Bet you didn’t expect me back so soon. Outside circumstances are giving you a double dose of Dan two weeks in a row, so let’s do this! Uncanny X-men #1 Writer: Kieron Gillen Artist: Carlos Pacheco: This is what you should be doing with the X book. It’s not some wacky-art tour like Wolverine was, it’s a fair intro to the characters that has a big ol’ bad guy to fight. Very good stuff. Shame Itself #1: Writer/Artist: Various: There’s a lot to like about this comedy anthology one-shot. It’s fun stuff that’s very self-criticizing. It’s got a … Continue reading

Justice-League-1-01

All right folks! After a brief hiatus due to unforeseen circumstances, not my fault, we’re back in business! Now that I’m done refusing to take blame, let’s do this! Justice League #1 Writer: Geoff Johns Artist: Jim Lee C’mon folks, did you really think I’d start my reviews and NOT talk about this? Really? Well guess what, this is the flagship title of the entire DCnU, it’s pretty much the only comic that really matters this week, and how do you think it all went down? It’s a great big “meh” ladies and gentlemen. I had my dad read it … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #201

Sergio-1

Sergio Aragones Funnies #1 — Creator: Sergio Aragones A book of all-new Sergio, with two eight-page stories in color (the colorist, Tom Luth, is one of the few people on the planet who can color the obsessively-detailed Aragones art effectively), plus some one-page gags, plus a couple of puzzle pages (including a find-the-differences-in-the-panels game, and a find-the-two-identical-comics one, that are custom-made for that detailed style, and should be fun for any readers who can remember looking for Waldo). Aragones is a national treasure — of two countries — and the indicia’s indication that this will be a monthly comic is … Continue reading

hboy:bob1

Hellboy/Beasts of Burden #1 (of 1) — Writers: Evan Dorkin with Mike Mignola;  Art: Jill Thompson Alan put this book out as my contribution to the “Pick Hits” wall for the week without even asking, because he knows how much I love Dorkin and Thompson’s spook-chasing critters, and this crossover with Hellboy (with Mignola providing the Big Red Demon’s dialog) doesn’t disappoint: same clever bits, same effective characterization, same refusal to go for the easy cuteness, same wonderful, award-winning art. If you’ve never encountered Beasts of Burden before, this is a great intro, and a perfect Hallowe’en present; if you … Continue reading
