Saga 11

All right folks, we’re here, let’s do this! Saga #11 Writer: Brian K Vaughan Artist: Fiona Staples So Saga is pretty awesome, but you knew that already, right? After last issue’s… maybe, upsetting character kill, this issue kicks you in the gut just as hard. Vaughan, as always, makes the reader care about his characters, to the point where the sci-fi weirdness is almost irrelevant. This is the kind of comic that’s accessible to anyone, it’s just really good stuff. Staples art style is something you have to get used to, but once you do, every little piece of effort … Continue reading

black beetle 1

Another week, another set of reviews where I use the same adjective repeatedly. Let’s do this! The Black Beetle #1 Writer/Artist: Francesco Francavilla So yeah, I knew this was going to be incredibly sweet based purely on the fact that it was Francavilla doing what he wants. His art style is almost like a noir-cartoon and it’s some of the best that you’re going to find on the comic book stands. So far, in the two issues that have come out of this series, Francavilla has also shown that he can put together a coherent mystery that leaves the reader … Continue reading

Hulk 12

Holy guacamole… I’m back! Weird scheduling gave Phil the best shipping week in a while last week, and what do I get? Well, let’s just find out! Bulletproof Coffin: Disinterred #6 Writer: David Hine Artist: Shaky Kane Well, this was a thing. I decided to look up the word disinterred, and got the phrase “to bring from obscurity into view” and ya know what? I’ll accept that. This book has been a plethora of strange stories that don’t even remotely tie together. Individual issues that pretend to be a cohesive mini-series based almost entirely in the world of the strange. … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #226

Walking Dead #100

Walking Dead #100 — Writer: Robert Kirkman;  Art: Charlie Adlard This is now officially the best-selling comic of the year, a tribute to both Kirkman’s storytelling skills and luck in catching the cultural zombie zeitgeist at just the right moment, and with just the right media tie-ins and collaborators. Eddie thought it  was lazy — it provides just the kind of major-character death that you’d expect, and on top of that it’s got a lot of echoes from the earlier “Governor” storyline. That’s all true; on the other hand, you have to admire the way the brutal, low-tech nature of … Continue reading

It Came From the Back Room #49

Conan the King #21

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items (these are featured at the discount racks at the west end of the store for a couple of weeks after each post, and then go to the discount racks on the east end of the store for a few weeks, and then disappear into our warehouses, so get them while you can). I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed, this amounts to a two-and-a-half-year project.  This week, we’re continuing the … Continue reading
