Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #266

All-New Marvel Now! Point One #1 — Creators: Various This is a series of eight-page stories involving five new Marvel launches — Silver Surfer, Ms. Marvel, The Invaders, Black Widow and Avengers World — meant to showcase those books’ creative teams and tempt readers into buying the comics; the stories are all woven together with a quest by Loki, who’s also headlining a new title: Loki, Agent of Asgard. Points here for making each episode a brand-new story, and not just a reprint of pages from the various first issues — but points off for charging readers $6 for the … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #261

Velvet #1 — Writer: Ed Brubaker;  Art: Steve Epting Image’s creator-owned titles have just been knocking it out of the park (ooh, World Series baseball metaphors!) all year, and this one is no exception; it’s by an established team (Brubaker and Epting spent years together on their well-regarded Captain America run), within an established genre (’60s/’70s-style spy thrillers, ala James Bond or Man From U.N.C.L.E.), but with an interesting twist (it focuses on the secretary/love interest of the spy agency, normally a throwaway character, who of course turns out to be much more than she seems). Brubaker is very good … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #257

Let’s start with a pair of DC books this week — very different, but tied for the top of the reading list: American Vampire Anthology — Creators: Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque;  Jason Aaron and Declan Shalvey; Rafael Albuquerque and Ivo Milazzo; Jeff Lemire and Ray Fawkes; Becky Cloonan; Francesco Francavilla; Gail Simone and Tula Lotay; Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon; Greg Rucka and JP Leon As with most anthologies, this rises or falls based on its creator credits — and look at them: that’s an all-star lineup. Snyder and Albuquerque, the book’s regular team, contribute a bookend story around … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #256

There are a lot of good non-corporate, creator-owned books out right now (this has been a great year for them), so let’s start with those this week: Saga #13 — Writer: Brian K. Vaughan;  Art: Fiona Staples This is revving up again after a few months’ absence (the creative team takes a break after each six-issue volume), and the cover helps to show why Staples, the artist, has been such a big part of its becoming a hit: the eyes are drawn to the cute baby first, and the lifelike eyes, but then they notice the horns… and the fact … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #76 by Dan!

All right folks! It’s been an interesting week, so let’s do this! Superman Unchained #1 Writer: Scott Snyder Artist: Jim Lee Batman #21 Writer: Greg Capullo Artist: Greg Capullo Two very different books come from one writer this week. The big brand new ‘crazy awesome’ Superman comic kinda hits with a thump. There’s a lot of ideas here (a Superman-equivalent from the 40s could be used to beat Superman, Lois Lane’s dad is evil as always, Lex Luthor is watching, as always), but the problem is that there seems to be nothing I haven’t seen before. Even the Lee art … Continue reading
