It’s Thanksgiving week; the holidays are in motion; you’re out with your loved ones, and I’m writing comic reviews. All is right in the world. Let’s do this! Captain America #1 Writer: Rick Remender Artist: John Romita This is a comic book. The more I think about it, that’s almost all I have to say about it. It’s about as generic as a Captain America book could possibly be. Remender may be building to something, but it feels like a slower burn than normal. We can’t forget that Romita Jr. doesn’t try as hard if he’s not doing creator-owned work. … Continue reading

The Boys #72 — Writer: Garth Ennis; Art: Darick Robertson with Richard P. Clark The last issue of Ennis’s longest complete story since Preacher (he wrote more issues of Punisher, but that had no conclusion). Like Preacher, most of the action took place in the penultimate issue, leaving this one for codas, cleanup and relationship resolutions (at least, of those characters who are still alive), and while it’s hard to say much about it without spoilers, it’s nice to have Robertson back for the ending (although Russ Braun, who actually drew more issues, deserves at least a shout-out somewhere here), and … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #235
Liberty Annual 2012 — Creators: Various This is the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund’s annual moneyraising effort; they’re a First Amendment organization whose primary purpose is to defend comic book retailers (and publishers and creators) from legal challenges when some local parent or prosecutor decides that a comic is obscene. To a journalism major like me, that’s a noble goal; they’ve kept a lot of people out of jail (or from losing their stores) just because they sold someone a comic book. As you might expect, a lot of comics creators appreciate their work, too, so these anthologies are always … Continue reading

Journey Into Mystery #644 — Writers: Kieron Gillen and Matt Fraction; Art: Carmine di Giandomenico I’ve made it no secret how much I like Teen Loki: instead of a stereotypical cackling villain, he’s a kid trying desperately to do the right thing, and he’s willing to cheat, lie and piss off any powerful adult figures to do it. That makes him, simultaneously, a typical Trickster archetype and a typical adolescent, and leads frequently to results like the one on this issue’s cover. In the capable hands of Gillen and Fraction, we’ve actually come to care about the little hustler; here’s … Continue reading

Holy guacamole… I’m back! Weird scheduling gave Phil the best shipping week in a while last week, and what do I get? Well, let’s just find out! Bulletproof Coffin: Disinterred #6 Writer: David Hine Artist: Shaky Kane Well, this was a thing. I decided to look up the word disinterred, and got the phrase “to bring from obscurity into view” and ya know what? I’ll accept that. This book has been a plethora of strange stories that don’t even remotely tie together. Individual issues that pretend to be a cohesive mini-series based almost entirely in the world of the strange. … Continue reading
