Hi folks! the internet is down at my house, so I’m hanging with my parents while I do this. Yee-haw! Let’s do this! New Avengers #6 Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist: Steve Epting Aside from Deadpool, which I don’t count cause it’s a comedy, sometimes I feel like New Avengers is the ony Marvel Now book really worth reading. It’s a completely fresh take on traditional Marvel characters, it’s introduced some new players, and it’s got a high concept that’s bound to have a payoff at some point. With this issue, the cover doesn’t lie, as a planet blows up, things … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #248

Young Avengers #4 — Writer: Kieron Gillen; Art: Jamie McKelvie with Mike Norton A lot of good books came out this week, but I’m putting this one at the top just because Gillen and McKelvie are having such an obvious blast creating it — between the playful layouts (especially a double-page splash involving a Marvel Boy fight), the skillful mix of drama and deadpan humor, and the young Loki’s expressions as he walks his tightrope act (is he trying to do the right thing, or the wrong thing? How do you trust a trickster god?), this is a comic that … Continue reading

B.P.R.D.: Vampire #1 (of 5) — Writer: Mike Mignola; Art: Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon This sequel to B.P.R.D.: 1947 offers the return of the Brazilian twin brothers Ba and Moon (their last work was the magic-realist Vertigo mini-series Daytripper), and between their evocative art and Mignola’s well-staged, every-word-counts writing, this is one good-looking, creepy horror book. You really don’t need to know any more than that, so you? Young Avengers #3 — Writer: Kieron Gillen; Art: Jamie McKelvie with Mike Norton Another great writer/artist team (everybody’s read their two Phonogram series, right? The second one, especially? The one I … Continue reading

Hawkeye #1 — Writer: Matt Fraction; Art: David Aja Invincible Iron Man #522 — Writer: Matt Fraction; Art: Salvador Larroca Defenders #9 — Writer: Matt Fraction; Artists: Jamie McKelvie with Mike Norton Three by one of Marvel’s top go-to writers. If Hawkeye’s creative unit feels familiar, that’s because Fraction and Aja were teamed (along with co-writer Ed Brubaker) on the cult favorite Iron Fist a few years ago, and since then they’ve only gotten better. This reminds me a lot of the sublime Daredevil, with its very clean, clear art, its masterful use of small panels to make the narrative flow smoothly, its firm … Continue reading

Oh man, bet you didn’t expect me to be back this soon, did you? Well here I am, so let’s do this! Mind MGMT #2 Writer/Artist: Matt Kindt This books makes my brain explode. You start with the cover’s hidden words, you read the story inside both covers, that hints at the ideas of the coming issue; you read the issue using the foreshadowing blue lines along the side, then you read the part of the second story that explains a bit more that might come around. THEN you read the letters page that shows more and the fake back … Continue reading
