Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #359

Black Widow #1 — Writers: Chris Samnee and Mark Waid; Art: Chris Samnee; Colors: Matthew Wilson Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill Alpha — Writer: Nick Spencer; Art/Colors: Jesus Saiz Two debuts from Marvel: Black Widow‘s had a lot of anticipation, coming from the Daredevil team of Waid and Samnee, and what this first issue offers is basically the first five minutes of a James Bond or Mission Impossible film: a full-on action sequence/chase showcasing the super-spy derring-do aspects of the character. Since much of it is wordless, it’s over quickly, and readers may feel like “That’s it?”, but if … Continue reading

Young Avengers #13 — Writer: Kieron Gillen; Art: Jamie McKelvie I know I put this at the top of my list every time it comes out, and you’re probably tired of hearing about it, but I don’t care: it’s been a wonderful series, with pretty and precise art, great characterization and plotting, and a smooth teamwork between Gillen and McKelvie that’s just made the whole story hum and surge like a racing-car engine. This ends the big story/fight, and resolves a number of issues, especially involving Loki; the final two books will be mostly a well-deserved curtain call and wrap-up … Continue reading

Avengers #11 — Writer: Jonathan Hickman; Art: Mike Deodato Secret Avengers #4 — Writer: Nick Spencer; Art: Luke Ross Uncanny Avengers #8 — Writer: Rick Remender; Art: Daniel Acuna Avengers Assemble #15 AU — Writer: Al Ewing; Pencils: Butch Guice; Inks: Tom Palmer with Rick Magyar Lots of Avengers comics this week (plus Avengers Arena, although only the title of that mini-series really connects it to the franchise), and they’re a mixed bag. Hickman’s Avengers is the best; wisely, this is a special-ops, done-in-one story, so it doesn’t add to the title’s increasingly-complex backstory: it’s got Shang-Chi, Spider-Woman, Black Widow, … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #227

Everybody Loves Tank Girl #1 — Writer: Alan Martin; Art: Jim Mahfood This gets first place this week because Mahfood (who has a big Phoenix connection, having attended ASU and drawn for New Times for a number of years) turns out to be a perfect artist for the ordinance-obsessed Australian riot grrl. With scripts by Martin, her original co-creator, all the characters “sound” right, and, given the typically tossed-off nature of the stories here, Mahfood’s knack for humor, cartoon violence and obsessively-detailed background bits adds just the right ingrediants. If Jamie Hewlitt stays too busy with the Gorillaz to draw … Continue reading
