BPRD Vampire #1

B.P.R.D.: Vampire #1 (of 5) — Writer: Mike Mignola;  Art: Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon This sequel to B.P.R.D.: 1947 offers the return of the Brazilian twin brothers Ba and Moon (their last work was the magic-realist Vertigo mini-series Daytripper), and between their evocative art and Mignola’s well-staged, every-word-counts writing, this is one good-looking, creepy horror book. You really don’t need to know any more than that, so you? Young Avengers #3 — Writer: Kieron Gillen;  Art: Jamie McKelvie with Mike Norton Another great writer/artist team (everybody’s read their two Phonogram series, right? The second one, especially? The one I … Continue reading

All New X Men #2

All-New X-Men #2 — Writer: Brian Michael Bendis;  Pencils: Stuart Immonen;  Inks: Wade von Grawbadger New Avengers #34 — Writer: Brian Michael Bendis;  Art: Mike Deodato Two by Bendis, a beginning and an ending. The X-Men is the second issue, and after all the set-up of the first it actually takes off and offers an intriguing look at the teenage X-Men, brought from the past by a dying Beast to try to talk sense into the current Scott Summers. This is the very definition of “high concept,” of course, but, eye-rolling aside, it works very well — what fan can … Continue reading

Liberty Annual 2012

Liberty Annual 2012 — Creators: Various This is the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund’s annual moneyraising effort; they’re a First Amendment organization whose primary purpose is to defend comic book retailers (and publishers and creators) from legal challenges when some local parent or prosecutor decides that a comic is obscene. To a journalism major like me, that’s a noble goal; they’ve kept a lot of people out of jail (or from losing their stores) just because they sold someone a comic book. As you might expect, a lot of comics creators appreciate their work, too, so these anthologies are always … Continue reading

A vs X #12

Avengers Vs X-Men #12 (of 12) — Writer: Jason Aaron;  Pencils: Adam Kubert;  Inks: John Dell with Mark Morales and Adam Kubert This may not be the best book of the week, but it’s the best seller, and it’s been surprisingly good — partly because the last few Marvel events, especially Fear Itself, lowered expectations considerably. Aaron is a good choice for writer — he doesn’t have some of the stylistic tics in dialogue of a Bendis or a Fraction, so he doesn’t call attention to his writing, and lets the art and action speak for itself, while Kubert holds … Continue reading

Daredevil #17

Daredevil #17 — Writer: Mark Waid;  Art: Michael Allred Guest artist Allred puts this book at the top this week (although it doesn’t need a lot of help — the letters page mentions the three Eisner awards it won this year, for best writer, best continuing series and best single issue (#7), and also lists the great artists it’s had  – the Riveras, Marcos Martin and Chris Samnee — so it’s been doing just fine, thanks). The story’s little more than treading water from last issue’s Matt/Foggy split — DD muses about an earlier case he and Nelson argued over … Continue reading
