Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #276

Fatale #24 (of 24) — Writer: Ed Brubaker;  Art: Sean Phillips Hawkeye #19 — Writer: Matt Fraction;  Art: David Aja Sandman: Overture #3 (of 6) — Writer: Neil Gaiman;  Art: J. H. Williams III Outcast #2 — Writer: Robert Kirkman;  Art: Paul Azaceta These first four books are linked simply because they’re all good stories from top creative teams, and representative of the best that weekly serial comics have to offer. Fatale is the last issue, and a definite, and satisfying, conclusion to the story; Brubaker and Phillips have been offering effective crime/noir books for a decade now, since Sleeper, … Continue reading

The Wicked and the Divine #1 — Writer: Kieron Gillen;  Art: Jamie McKelvie Iron Man #28 — Writer: Kieron Gillen;  Pencils: Joe Bennett, Cliff Richards and Derlis Santacruz;  Inks: Scott Hanna and Rick Magyar Gillen’s one of the better writers in comics right now, and his first big splash was Phonogram — especially the second volume, a multiple-perspective tale of one night in a dance hall, and the magical effects of the music played there on its listeners. That was a collaboration with McKelvie, too, and the team went on to create one of last year’s best mainstream series, Young Avengers; … Continue reading

It helps a lot if you come into this having read the Free Comic Book Day Futures End #0, since that sets up the premise — the DC Earth of 35 years from now has been taken over by Brother Eye (in this continuity, created by the New-52 version of Mr. … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #259

Yet another week with lots of first issues; comics fans certainly can’t complain about a lack of new options this year!  Let’s start with Marvel, who are offering three brand-new titles (even though they’re all revivals…): She-Hulk #1 — Writer: Charles Soule;  Art: Javier Pulido This is a well-done first issue: it takes the best ideas from the character’s previous run (especially that she’s a lawyer specializing in superhero legislation, meaning her stories can involve practically anyone in the Marvel universe), adds a new wrinkle (she quits her job at her current law firm, and has to decide what to … Continue reading

Phil”s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #262

Kinda boring Marvel/DC titles this week — and does anyone following DC need me to tell them Forever Evil #3 came out? Everyone who cares knows, right? Instead, let’s look at some of the indy books you may not know about, including a quintet of first issues…. Drumhellar #1 — Story, Art: Riley Rossmo; Script: Alex Link Rossmo was last seen drawing Dia De Los Muertos, an anthology mini-series where he illustrated horror scripts from a number of different writers, about this time last year; that established him as a careful craftsman with a knack for appealing-looking, realistic characters caught in fantastic … Continue reading
