The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #15 by Dan!

All right folks!  It was a seriously huge week, so let’s get down to business! My Top 5 (The 5 Best Comics of the Week) Fantastic Four #587 Writer: Jonathan Hickman, Artist: Steve Epting I am shocked.  I really have not cared about the Hickman FF run at all.  I found it boring, pretentious and convoluted.  Then the last six pages of this issue happened.  I know that you’ve probably all heard about the death, but I don’t feel like spoiling it.  Just know that it was in a super bad-ass take no prisoners, kicking and screaming kinda way, adding … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #187

Jonah Hex #63 — Writers: Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti;  Art: Jordi Bernet In a week without a lot of must-buy items, let’s start with an old reliable: as I’ve said here before, Jonah Hex stands or falls on its artists, and Bernet is the best among them; like a lot of European artists, his pleasure at getting to draw the Old West and its quirky, craggy characters and scenery is infectious, and the more terrible their actions (and the retribution that Hex rains down upon them), the more inspired his art becomes. Palmiotti and Gray give him a lot … Continue reading

Fresh Eyes on Old Books #13 by Dan!

It’s a new year! Do you know what that means?  All these comics are older, and you are too! Let’s do this. Tales to Astonish #60 from 1964 So, I really don’t like the Hulk that much.  I find him a big, boring, punching machine, and it just doesn’t usually work for me.  This issue was no real exception.  Ditko art was very pretty to look at, and what really surprised me was just how much dialogue this Hulk story had.  You’d think it would be more of a grunt-and-punch type of story, but instead it was plot heavy, which … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #13 By Dan!

The last reviews of the New Year! Don’t forget to come to the sale!  Heck, why are you even reading this, go to the sale now! My Top Five (The Five Best Comics of the Week) Flash #8 Writer: Geoff Johns Artist: Scott Kolins Kolins is completely in his element whenever he does a Rogue profile, as can be seen in this issue.  Dealing with how the Reverse Flash came to be, Kolins is able to make every word that Johns puts on the page really come to life.  The story itself is bizarre, and sounds like an idea that … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #12 by Dan!

All right folks, it’s a Saturday morning, so you know what that means!  Review time! My Top Five (The Five Best Comics of the Week) Black Panther: The Man Without Fear #513 Writer: David Liss Artist: Francesco Francavilla This book was surprisingly awesome.  As was the case with Spider-man during “One More Day”, maybe Shadowland will lead to something much more fun.  Black Panther shows up fresh of his last failed series (has that been six?) to be a street level fighter on a quest for personal redemption.  He’s abandoned his family and kingdom to try to reconnect with the … Continue reading
