Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #285

No more DC special animated covers, but we’re back to lots of first issues — significant debuts from Marvel, DC, Image and a few other companies too — so that should be more than enough to keep us busy: Thor #1 — Writer: Jason Aaron;  Art: Russell Dauterman Marvel gets the most buzz on its new books this week, especially with this distaff version of one of their oldest characters. This isn’t quite a brand-new relaunch of the title (in the way, say, the new Batgirl completely changes the character’s setting, circumstances, creative team, etc.), since Aaron’s still the writer, … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #258

Yes, yes, we’ll get to all of those fancy DC villain books in a minute (even though, contrary to this column’s title, I didn’t buy all of them — but, hey, without credits on the cover, I figure you need some sort of quick description of each one, to see which will be worth your time) — but first, let’s look at the regular titles that stood out this week: Astro City #4 — Writer: Kurt Busiek;  Art: Brent Eric Anderson This was the best book of the week the last time it came out, too, and it’ll probably be … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #187

Jonah Hex #63 — Writers: Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti;  Art: Jordi Bernet In a week without a lot of must-buy items, let’s start with an old reliable: as I’ve said here before, Jonah Hex stands or falls on its artists, and Bernet is the best among them; like a lot of European artists, his pleasure at getting to draw the Old West and its quirky, craggy characters and scenery is infectious, and the more terrible their actions (and the retribution that Hex rains down upon them), the more inspired his art becomes. Palmiotti and Gray give him a lot … Continue reading

It Came From the Back Room #12

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed (even with school on holiday break right now), this amounts to a two-year project. This week, I’ve managed to finish “M” and get started on “L.” As it turns out, there are no Marvel “L” regular series (well, Logan’s Run, which lasted seven issues, but that’s under “Marvel Movie and TV Tie-ins”), so it’s all indy and DC titles for the time being. … Continue reading
