Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #287
Miraculously, we have a week without dozens of new titles, or sparkly 3D covers, or other major debuts or milestones (yeah, Wolverine “dies,” but c’mon…). That’s good, because it gives us a chance to spotlight some of the better ongoing titles, the ones that sometimes get lost in the pr hype of the new stuff: Trees #6 — Writer: Warren Ellis; Art: Jason Howard Supreme: Blue Rose #4 — Writer: Warren Ellis; Art: Tula Lotay Case in point: Ellis is doing some of the best work of his career with these two books. Batman Eternal #6 Writer: Ray Fawkes Artist: Tervor McCarthy Futures End #2 Writer: Various Artist: Jesus Merin. Let’s talk about DC weeklies, shall we? Always providing varying degrees of content, DC loves to see how many times they can get you to spend $2.99 a week. But are they any good? The answer is “sigh… eh?” Batman Eternal has had more time to breathe, and it’s been diving head first into a Gotham Gang war, with lots of … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #257
Let’s start with a pair of DC books this week — very different, but tied for the top of the reading list: American Vampire Anthology — Creators: Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque; Jason Aaron and Declan Shalvey; Rafael Albuquerque and Ivo Milazzo; Jeff Lemire and Ray Fawkes; Becky Cloonan; Francesco Francavilla; Gail Simone and Tula Lotay; Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon; Greg Rucka and JP Leon As with most anthologies, this rises or falls based on its creator credits — and look at them: that’s an all-star lineup. Snyder and Albuquerque, the book’s regular team, contribute a bookend story around … Continue reading
