It Came From the Back Room #53

Batman Adventures #1

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed (especially now that school’s started again), this amounts to a three-year project.  This week, we’ve restocked the west-end discount racks (nearest the parking lot) with one Marvel and one DC “B” title. Marvel first: Black Panther Marvel’s African king (and Avenger) wasn’t the first black character or hero in comics, but he was the first with actual superpowers, and by far the most … Continue reading

Adventure Time #1

Hoo boy! It’s a Saturday, so it’s game on with the reviews folks. This was an odd week with cancellations and new titles and more, so let’s do this! Adventure Time #1 Writer: Ryan North Artist: Shelli Paroline & Braden Lamb This. Book. Is. Awesome. An evil “bag of holding” starts trying to defeat Finn and Jake and everyone in adventure time, so it’s up to them to save the day. That doesn’t exactly work, even when they combine together to make Jake into a suit that Finn wears. It’s absolutely crazy. There’s captions at the bottom that put the … Continue reading

So… funny story. I got a real job. (What are we….chopped liver? Editor Alan!) But I don’t have the actual guts to just up and quit this job, so you won’t be seeing any less of me here on this blog. Let’s do this! TMNT Micro-Series #2 Michelangelo Writer: Brian Lynch Artist: Andy Kuhn: All right you guys, I don’t’ know why I feel like some kind of huge sell-out, but I am absolutely Loving this new TMNT series. This micro-series is not even remotely a step down in quality from the current series, and it’s just pure fun. I … Continue reading

Oh boy. Amidst the chaos that is graduation I’m still droppin’ reviews like it’s nobody’s business. Let’s do this! Batwoman #4 Writers: J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman Artist: Williams Don’t get me wrong, I love this book. It is without a doubt the best looking book of the new DC 52. It’s a delight to just look at every single page and analyze what exactly is happening. Williams varies his style by the page, and every one seems like a new invention. However, I really miss Greg Rucka. The story itself is just falling flat with me. It’s … Continue reading

HellboyFury3

Watching Breaking Bad leads to a very odd set of reviews. There’s something about meth that just puts ya in the mind frame. They’re not rocks folks, they’re minerals. Let’s do this! Hellboy: The Fury #3 Writer: Mike Mignola Artist: Duncan Fegredo SPOILER! Hey! Hellboy’s dead now. So there’s that. This whole story led to a grand conclusion that send Hellboy to… Hell. Oddly Enough. The whole point of Mignola’s universe of characters is the journey. Every story links up to form this giant beautiful continuity that actually is not inaccessible for new readers. Consistently having Fegredo provide his off-kilter … Continue reading
