Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #209

Rachel Rising #3 — Writer/Artist: Terry Moore We’re still in “set up the mystery” mode, as the title character, having clawed her way out of a shallow grave, exhibits spooky precog powers and watches bad things happen to other people. There’s some kind of possession thing going on, and it’s all very well staged, and drawn very prettily too. Echo, Moore’s last effort, was remarkably well thought out, so I trust that the eventual explanation here will be a lot of fun, and involve a lot of action. With only four issues so far, readers still have time to get in … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #208

Fables #110 — Writer: Bill Willingham;  Pencils: Mark Buckingham; Inks: Steve Leialoha and Shawn McManus This is just a normal issue of this book, by the normal creators — but it’s a good example of its charms: the monkey Bufkin and his allies are in the Land of Oz, fermenting revolution against the evil emperor Roquat, while in the land of the now-dead North Wind Bigby, Snow White and their children are facing down the other winds, and trying to decide which of the kids will take over as the new replacement avatar; meanwhile, in Mr. Dark’s old palace, the … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #29

Watching Breaking Bad leads to a very odd set of reviews. There’s something about meth that just puts ya in the mind frame. They’re not rocks folks, they’re minerals. Let’s do this! Hellboy: The Fury #3 Writer: Mike Mignola Artist: Duncan Fegredo SPOILER! Hey! Hellboy’s dead now. So there’s that. This whole story led to a grand conclusion that send Hellboy to… Hell. Oddly Enough. The whole point of Mignola’s universe of characters is the journey. Every story links up to form this giant beautiful continuity that actually is not inaccessible for new readers. Consistently having Fegredo provide his off-kilter … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #200

Flashpoint #3 (of 5) — Writer: Geoff Johns;  Pencils: Andy Kubert;  Inks: Sandra Hope This being the middle of five chapters, it’s the appropriate time for our lead character to regain his powers (by doing the exact same thing he did in the previous issue, only adding more… cowbell, or something), and try to get the JLA band back together — although, as it turns out, some of the members are in better shape than others. As a main event, this comic has been a lot more focused than Marvel’s Fear Itself — it’s shorter, and the problem (undo the … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #24

All right folks, the X-men movie is out, and I haven’t seen it yet.  Do not spoil it for me… I warnin’ ya’!  Let’s do this! My Top 5 (The 5 Best Comics of the Week) Secret Seven #1 Writer: Peter Milligan Artist: George Pérez This series is the exact kind of story that these mini series should be.  You draw in the classic people with Pérez art, you draw in the indie crowd with Hellblazer‘s Milligan and what you get is pure F-ing insanity.  There’s so much going on here, and it’s almost completely independent to the Flashpoint series … Continue reading
