Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #209
Rachel Rising #3 — Writer/Artist: Terry Moore We’re still in “set up the mystery” mode, as the title character, having clawed her way out of a shallow grave, exhibits spooky precog powers and watches bad things happen to other people. There’s some kind of possession thing going on, and it’s all very well staged, and drawn very prettily too. Echo, Moore’s last effort, was remarkably well thought out, so I trust that the eventual explanation here will be a lot of fun, and involve a lot of action. With only four issues so far, readers still have time to get in … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #33 by Dan!
So we’re back in business, and now we’re taking on the number twos, which sounds weird to me, but I’m also a 12-year-old, so that makes it funnier. Before attacking the DC relaunch, we’re actually gunna hit up some other comics, including more #1′s, that are worth noting this week. Let’s do this! Legion of Monster #1 Writer: Dennis Hopeless Artist: Juan Doe I don’t know why I love this book. To put it simply, it’s a team-up monster comic that’s absolutely hilarious. It’s in the style of things like N.E.X.T.W.A.V.E. and it’s damn good, especially for a book with … Continue reading

Phil’s reviews — Stuff I Bought #205
Lots of books this week, kids, so let’s do short reviews on each one. Before we get to all those DC first issues, though, there are a few other comics that deserve your attention: Casanova: Avaritia #1 (of 6) — Writer: Matt Fraction; Art: Gabriel Ba Marvel’s Icon imprint having re-presented the earlier issues of this, Fraction’s indy manifesto, we now get the first new story, in color. Cutting-edge in both the visuals and the plotting, with freeze-frames, multiversal dimensional destruction, and lots of intriguing pretty people, this makes more sense if you’re already familiar with the characters, but if … Continue reading

Watching Breaking Bad leads to a very odd set of reviews. There’s something about meth that just puts ya in the mind frame. They’re not rocks folks, they’re minerals. Let’s do this! Hellboy: The Fury #3 Writer: Mike Mignola Artist: Duncan Fegredo SPOILER! Hey! Hellboy’s dead now. So there’s that. This whole story led to a grand conclusion that send Hellboy to… Hell. Oddly Enough. The whole point of Mignola’s universe of characters is the journey. Every story links up to form this giant beautiful continuity that actually is not inaccessible for new readers. Consistently having Fegredo provide his off-kilter … Continue reading

Let’s do this! My Top 5 (The 5 Best Comics of the Week) SpongeBob Comics #1 Writer/Artists: Various Yes I am currently watching SpongeBob; why do you ask? I was a little surprised by a couple of things. First, I’m surprised this comic exists. Second, I’m surprised this comic wasn’t made much sooner. Third, I’m surprised that it actually captures the fun of the ridiculous tv show that accompanies it. This is more of an anthology book with several stories throughout Bikini Bottom. At times bizarre, at times hilarious, it’s a pretty good representation of what the show normally offers … Continue reading
