15 Love #1 (of 3) — Writer: Andi Watson;  Art: Tommy Ohtsuka As the title implies, this is a comic about tennis — and, as hinted by the artist’s last name, it’s done in a very straight-ahead, clean manga style. Watson’s a dependably quirky and entertaining writer, very good at getting the small nooks and crannies of everyday life right, and this tale of a young female protagonist who’s good at tennis, but not good enough — and the rumpled coach who tries to help her — is a comfortably familiar story that’s capable of going off in unexpected directions. … Continue reading →

Hate Annual #9 — Creator: Peter Bagge This doesn’t come out that often, but it’s always a pleasure to read, and a comfort to know that Bagge is still out there, chronicling the continuing adventures of Buddy and Lisa and their respective families (and that they’re all just as screwed-up and oddly compelling as always). Journey Into Mystery #622 — Writer: Kieron Gillen;  Pencils: Dougie Braithwaite;  Colorist: Ulises Arreola This title takes over the numbering of the old Thor, since series writer Matt Fraction is leaving to helm the new Thor the Mighty (you’d think some sort of media event starring the Asgardian Avenger was coming…). Gillen handled a few Thor stories last year, and did a good job, and here delivers a young-Loki tale that’s layered, lyrical and actually makes you like the complicated little trickster; it’s a sign that, with a crossover mini-series and a movie all throwing a big spotlight on the … Continue reading →

Uncle Scrooge #401 — Writer/Artist: Don Rosa: “The Universal Solvent.” Rosa originally wrote this 24-page story in 1995, for (I think) one of the European Disney books; it appeared here in the US in 1997 in Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories #s 604-606. Gyro Gearloose invents the titular solvent (to demonstrate it to a skeptical Scrooge, he pours it through a stack of “the most impervious substances known to mankind,” starting with lead, and going through iron to “titanium steel,” “impervium,” and, at the bottom, “Disney contract”), and Scrooge spills a bottle on the ground, setting off a wild, science-fueled adventure … Continue reading →

Iron Man #500 — Writer: Matt Fraction;  Art: Salvador Larroca and Frank D’Armata; Kano; Nathan Fox and Javier Rodriguez; Carmine Di Giandomenico and Matthew Wilson One of those start-the-original-numbering-over anniversary issues, complete with a five-page gallery of all 500 covers. Fraction proved with last year’s Iron Man Annual that’s he’s good at these big-event comics, and he doesn’t disappoint here, providing a 56-page story that guest-stars Spider-Man and roams from the present to the year 2052 (where the Mandarin, who was handled so well by Fraction in that annual, has taken over the world) and back; the varying time periods … Continue reading →
