Ultimate Fallout #4 (of 6) — Writers: Brian Michael Bendis, Jonathan Hickman, Nick Spencer;  Art: Sara Pichelli, Salvador Larroca, Clayton Crain This is the book that features the debut of the new, multiracial Ultimate Spider-Man. It’s only eight pages (the other parts involve Ultimate Reed Richards escaping the negative zone, and Val Cooper talking to a reporter who’s about to break a big story), but it’s gotten Marvel all the publicity it could have hoped for. Uncanny X-Men #537 — Writer: Kieron Gillen;  Pencils: Terry Dodson;  Inks: Rachel Dodson The two main X-books are in good hands right now: here, Gillen is in the middle of a sequel to Joss Whedon’s “Breakworld” story, and it’s the point in the narrative where things are going very badly for… well, everyone, but especially for Kitty, who’s the focus of this issue. Solid characterization, with clear motives even for the bad guy, and the Dodsons’ art is both pretty and expressive enough to make Kitty’s wordless attempts to get help poignant and clear. Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #194

Journey Into Mystery #622 — Writer: Kieron Gillen;  Pencils: Dougie Braithwaite;  Colorist: Ulises Arreola This title takes over the numbering of the old Thor, since series writer Matt Fraction is leaving to helm the new Thor the Mighty (you’d think some sort of media event starring the Asgardian Avenger was coming…). Gillen handled a few Thor stories last year, and did a good job, and here delivers a young-Loki tale that’s layered, lyrical and actually makes you like the complicated little trickster; it’s a sign that, with a crossover mini-series and a movie all throwing a big spotlight on the … Continue reading
