Hellboy: Being Human #1 (of 1) — Writer: Mike Mignola; Art: Richard Corben A Hellboy story by the Mignola/Corben team is always cause for celebration, and this one-shot is no exception: it doesn’t have the over-the-top backwoods craziness of their The Crooked Man, from a few years ago, but there’s enough Southern gothic atmosphere, with crumbling mansions and various decayed corpses (as an old woman, scorned and unjustly institutionalized, enacts occult revenge against long-dead adversaries) to remind everyone of why Corben’s always had such a fine reputation for horror work — and to show that, even in his seventies, he … Continue reading

Journey Into Mystery #622 — Writer: Kieron Gillen; Pencils: Dougie Braithwaite; Colorist: Ulises Arreola This title takes over the numbering of the old Thor, since series writer Matt Fraction is leaving to helm the new Thor the Mighty (you’d think some sort of media event starring the Asgardian Avenger was coming…). Hellboy/Beasts of Burden #1 (of 1) — Writers: Evan Dorkin with Mike Mignola; Art: Jill Thompson Alan put this book out as my contribution to the “Pick Hits” wall for the week without even asking, because he knows how much I love Dorkin and Thompson’s spook-chasing critters, and this crossover with Hellboy (with Mignola providing the Big Red Demon’s dialog) doesn’t disappoint: same clever bits, same effective characterization, same refusal to go for the easy cuteness, same wonderful, award-winning art. Hellboy — The Storm #3 (of 3) — Writer: Mike Mignola; Art: Duncan Fegredo Baltimore: The Plague Ships #2 (of 5) — Writers: Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden; Art: Ben Steinbeck These two books are connected because they’re both from the Mignola studio, and both reflect the very high quality of all of its output. Hellboy, of course, is their franchise character, and this issue offers perfect examples of his stubborn, cranky morality: he’s going to do what his gut tells him is right, and if you give him any crap you’re gonna get punched.
