The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #35 by Dan

Oh no! Bet you didn’t expect me back so soon. Outside circumstances are giving you a double dose of Dan two weeks in a row, so let’s do this! Uncanny X-men #1 Writer: Kieron Gillen Artist: Carlos Pacheco: This is what you should be doing with the X book. It’s not some wacky-art tour like Wolverine was, it’s a fair intro to the characters that has a big ol’ bad guy to fight. Very good stuff. Shame Itself #1: Writer/Artist: Various: There’s a lot to like about this comedy anthology one-shot. It’s fun stuff that’s very self-criticizing. It’s got a … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #34 by Dan!

All right folks, here comes the last round of #2’s hitting the market. The Professor is claiming that he “doesn’t mean” to write 2,000 words about every one of these, but we all know he’s just screwing with me. On to the books! Incredible Hulk #1 Writer: Jason Aaron Artist: Marc Silvestri: I’m not a Hulk fan, I’m not a Silvestri fan, and Aaron is hit-or-miss. Here? It’s a miss. There’s nothing to draw me in, nothing fun and it’s not an issue I thought was worth anything at all. Wolverine and the X-men #1 Writer: Jason Aaron Artist: Chris … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #208

Fables #110 — Writer: Bill Willingham; Pencils: Mark Buckingham; Inks: Steve Leialoha and Shawn McManus This is just a normal issue of this book, by the normal creators — but it’s a good example of its charms: the monkey Bufkin and his allies are in the Land of Oz, fermenting revolution against the evil emperor Roquat, while in the land of the now-dead North Wind Bigby, Snow White and their children are facing down the other winds, and trying to decide which of the kids will take over as the new replacement avatar; meanwhile, in Mr. Dark’s old palace, the … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #32

All right folks, it’s officially the last week of the DC 52 relaunch. So I swear it’s the last time Phil and I will ramble on about new DC comics (Well, I’ll make that promise. Ya never really know with the Professor). Just like two weeks ago, I’ll give quick sentences about other important stuff, then do the big 13 releases of the week. Let’s do this! Kick-Ass 2 #4 Writer: Mark Millar Artist: John Romita Jr.: Now with more gang-rape! This comic is getting really hardcore really quick. It’s intense! Brilliant #1 Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Mark Bagley: … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #206

The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Terror #17 — Creators: Zander Cannon, Gene Ha, Jane Wiedlin, Tom Hodges, Jim Woodring Hallowe’en comics already? Well, yes… October’s beginning next week, and Safeway already has pumpkins out, so it must be time for the Simpsons’ annual gift to alt-comics fans. Woodring’s the most stellar creator in display here, and his offering, a tribute to sleazy off-brand ’50s horror comics, is great fun. So too for the Cannon/Ha contribution that leads off the book, a beautifully-drawn homage to Nosferatu, the 1922 silent movie that was the first vampire film. The Wiedlin/Hodges offers the most on-model … Continue reading
