The Simpsons’  Treehouse of Terror #17 — Creators: Zander Cannon, Gene Ha, Jane Wiedlin, Tom Hodges, Jim Woodring Hallowe’en comics already? Well, yes… October’s beginning next week, and Safeway already has pumpkins out, so it must be time for the Simpsons’ annual gift to alt-comics fans. Woodring’s the most stellar creator in display here, and his offering, a tribute to sleazy off-brand ’50s horror comics, is great fun. So too for the Cannon/Ha contribution that leads off the book, a beautifully-drawn homage to Nosferatu, the 1922 silent movie that was the first vampire film. Fresh Eyes on Old Books #30

And we’re back. No seriously folks, I’ve done 30 of these things. How ridiculous is that? Eventually I’ve gotta run out of comics, but not yet. Let’s do this! Batman #240 from 1972 I’m not gunna lie folks, I grabbed this based purely on the cover. It’s hilarious. It turns out that this “head-in-a-jar” story is really a Ra’s and Talia Al Ghul story, which isn’t surprising with Denny O’Neil writing. It’s a trippy sci-fi story that really doesn’t advance any stronger plot, but it’s a fun little one-shot story. In addition there are two back-ups. First, A Robin story. … Continue reading →

Watching Breaking Bad leads to a very odd set of reviews. There’s something about meth that just puts ya in the mind frame. They’re not rocks folks, they’re minerals. Let’s do this! Hellboy: The Fury #3 Writer: Mike Mignola Artist: Duncan Fegredo SPOILER! Hey! Hellboy’s dead now. So there’s that. This whole story led to a grand conclusion that send Hellboy to… Hell. Flashpoint #3 (of 5) — Writer: Geoff Johns;  Pencils: Andy Kubert;  Inks: Sandra Hope This being the middle of five chapters, it’s the appropriate time for our lead character to regain his powers (by doing the exact same thing he did in the previous issue, only adding more… cowbell, or something), and try to get the JLA band back together — although, as it turns out, some of the members are in better shape than others.
