Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #283
Week three of DC’s moving-cover extravaganza brings ten more comics; this week, you don’t even have to click on the covers to see them move (assuming I embedded them correctly…)! Justice League #1 — Writer: Jeff Lemire; Art: Jed Dougherty This is the conclusion to a two-parter started over in Justice League United last week, wherein a super-villain prison on Mars (wardened by the Martian Manhunter) has a breakout, courtesy of a very powerful and crazy Captain Atom, and the Futures End version of the Justice League (plus a couple of members of the Legion of Super-Heroes) have to fight … Continue reading

As with last week, let’s tackle all of the DC issues with lenticular-motion covers first. Remember, if you click on the images here, you’ll be able to see the covers in full motion: which is, believe it or not, a pretty awesome effect, and sometimes a clearer look at the dual scenes than you can get from the covers themselves…. Batman #1 — Story: Ray Fawkes and Scott Snyder; Writer: Ray Fawkes; Art: ACO This is a good example of the way the better issues using the Futures End five-years-later gimmick are turning out: a five-years-older Batman, physically deteriorating because … Continue reading

So, the big news this week is that DC, who had so much success with their 3D cover promotion last September, is doing it again this year, with a few twists. First, the covers are lenticular instead of 3D; that means, while they appear to have depth like the 3D covers, they actually have two scenes embedded in them, and if you tilt the cover back and forth you can toggle between them — so, for example, on the Green Arrow cover, one scene just shows Oliver Queen’s tombstone, but when you look from another angle his ghostly image appears … Continue reading

There weren’t quite as many good comics this week as in the last few months — summer is definitely starting to wind down — but still more than enough to make a decent reading pile. Let’s look… Captain Marvel #6 — Writer: Kelly Sue Deconnick; Art: David Lopez This is the end of the book’s first arc, and it’s been a smart, stylish space story, with Carol helping the population of an oppressed planet against a seemingly-overwhelming military force (this issue’s scenes of an unarmed people protesting against heavily-armored authority figures echoes, quite by chance, recent events out of Missouri), … Continue reading
