Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #282

As with last week, let’s tackle all of the DC issues with lenticular-motion covers first. Remember, if you click on the images here, you’ll be able to see the covers in full motion: which is, believe it or not, a pretty awesome effect, and sometimes a clearer look at the dual scenes than you can get from the covers themselves…. Batman #1 — Story: Ray Fawkes and Scott Snyder;  Writer: Ray Fawkes;  Art: ACO This is a good example of the way the better issues using the Futures End five-years-later gimmick are turning out: a five-years-older Batman, physically deteriorating because … Continue reading

Fresh Eyes on Old Books #39

Happy New Year! I gotta go start a job, but I promise I’ll get these done first, so let’s do this! Strange Adventures #120 from 1960 No joke, the first story of this issue of Strange Adventures involves living oil trying to take over the world. Somehow, these creatures can start fires and not burn out, and it doesn’t make any sense.  It all ends up being a giant ad for someday getting to Mars. No, I’m not kidding. Fresh Eyes on Old Books #37 by Dan!

Oh the things I do for you people!… I just spent three hours editing for one of my classes and I still am giving you what you so desperately crave… more reviews! Action #278 from 1961 Alan’s eyes lit up yesterday when he saw I was reading this comic, and he basically went on to spoil the entire story for me. Perry White gains super powers (and loses a pot belly) by eating some mysterious plant found in his backyard (as we all have done at some … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #33 by Dan!

So we’re back in business, and now we’re taking on the number twos, which sounds weird to me, but I’m also a 12-year-old, so that makes it funnier. Before attacking the DC relaunch, we’re actually gunna hit up some other comics, including more #1’s, that are worth noting this week. Let’s do this! Legion of Monster #1 Writer: Dennis Hopeless Artist: Juan Doe I don’t know why I love this book. To put it simply, it’s a team-up monster comic that’s absolutely hilarious. It’s in the style of things like N.E.X.T.W.A.V.E. and it’s damn good, especially for a book with … Continue reading
