Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #186

Batman, Inc. #2 — Writer: Grant Morrison;  Pencils: Yanick Paquette;  Inks: Michel Lacombe So far, this version of Morrison’s Batman is a lot of fun — no overarching cosmic significance, or Invisibles-like time-spanning conspiracies: just brainy, fun superhero action in Japan, with relaxed, grown-up repartee between a confident Bruce and Catwoman (because, really, giant octupi and murderous reincarnated skeleton guys have no chance against the two of them when they’re at the top of their games), and a nice little bow at the end, to wrap up this first installment in the franchising of the Dark Knight in fine style. … Continue reading

It Came From the Back Room #12

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed (even with school on holiday break right now), this amounts to a two-year project. I’m taking a break from watching whatever the Cardinals are trying to do.  It sure isn’t playing football, but that’s the kind commentary I should save for a different blog.  Now, Comics! Defenders #6 from 1973 The Defenders are a team that has always surprised me.  They look like a poor-man’s Avengers team, consisting of throwaways that aren’t good enough for the main team.  But this title lasted over 150 issues, so do I really have any room to judge them?  It is a completely capable creative team in Steve Englehart and Sal Buscema.  It’s the kind of group that … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #12 by Dan!

All right folks, it’s a Saturday morning, so you know what that means!  Review time! My Top Five (The Five Best Comics of the Week) Black Panther: The Man Without Fear #513 Writer: David Liss Artist: Francesco Francavilla This book was surprisingly awesome.  As was the case with Spider-man during “One More Day”, maybe Shadowland will lead to something much more fun.  Black Panther shows up fresh of his last failed series (has that been six?) to be a street level fighter on a quest for personal redemption.  He’s abandoned his family and kingdom to try to reconnect with the … Continue reading
