Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #292
Wonder Woman #36 — Writer: Meredith Finch; Pencils: David Finch; Inks: Richard Friend; Colors: Sonia Oback Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman #4 — (First Story) Creator: Gilbert Hernandez; Colors: John Rauch; (Second Story) Writer: Rob Williams; Art: Tom Lyle; Colors: Wendy Broome; (Third Story) Writer: Nick Kleid; Art: Dean Haspiel; Colors: Allen Passalaqua Two Wonder Woman books — the regular comic features the debut of a new husband-and-wife creative team, the Finches. It’s OK, although if you liked the previous version you might not be too thrilled; unlike Azzarello/Chiang’s quirky, angular work, this is decidedly mainstream, and looks a lot … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #287
Miraculously, we have a week without dozens of new titles, or sparkly 3D covers, or other major debuts or milestones (yeah, Wolverine “dies,” but c’mon…). That’s good, because it gives us a chance to spotlight some of the better ongoing titles, the ones that sometimes get lost in the pr hype of the new stuff: Trees #6 — Writer: Warren Ellis; Art: Jason Howard Supreme: Blue Rose #4 — Writer: Warren Ellis; Art: Tula Lotay Case in point: Ellis is doing some of the best work of his career with these two books. Trees is creator-owned, and continues its hard-sf … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews : Stuff I Bought #284
Last week for the DC special covers, so let’s check them out (now that we’ve figured out how to animate them automatically), and then take a quick look at some of the best of this week’s other offerings: Harley Quinn #1 — Writers: Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Connor; Art: Chad Hardin This Futures End one-shot comes the closest of all of them to just being a regular issue of the comic: it’s by the same creative team, and its tongue-in-cheek style means it doesn’t care about continuity anyway (a good thing, since the Futures End Suicide Squad #1 a few … Continue reading

Life With Archie #37 — Writer: Paul Kupperberg; Pencils: Fernando Ruiz, Pat & Tim Kennedy; Inks: Bob Smith, Gary Martin Afterlife With Archie #6 — Writer: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa; Art: Francesco Francavilla If you’d told comics fans a year ago that, in the future, for two weeks in a row, the top books would be… Archie comics, they’d have laughed you out of your local comics shop — and yet here we are: after last week’s “Death of…,” the company follows up this week with two worthy efforts. The first, Life of Archie #37, is the coda to the character’s “death”: Riverdale a year later, … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #273
This was another week with lots of first issues (I haven’t done the math, but it seems like more new titles have started this year, from all kinds of different publishers, than in a long time), so let’s start with the indy/creator-owned ones, usually the most interesting: Spread #1 — Writer: Justin Jordan; Art: Kyle Strahm This is a post-apocalyptic tale, but not with zombies or vampires: it involves carnivorous space plants (like Day of the Triffids, but on steroids, since the plants — the “Spread” — have variations that can run and fly, and can possess/infect people). There are … Continue reading
