Let’s start with the Marvel output this week, since there are a couple of new first issues: Ms. Marvel #1 — Writer: G. Willow Wilson;  Art: Adrian Alphona This one’s gotten some press coverage, since the title character, Kamala, is a 16-year-old daughter of Pakistani immigrants, and a Muslim. Journey Into Mystery #644 — Writers: Kieron Gillen and Matt Fraction;  Art: Carmine di Giandomenico I’ve made it no secret how much I like Teen Loki: instead of a stereotypical cackling villain, he’s a kid trying desperately to do the right thing, and he’s willing to cheat, lie and piss off any powerful adult figures to do it. That makes him, simultaneously, a typical Trickster archetype and a typical adolescent, and leads frequently to results like the one on this issue’s cover. America’s Got Powers #1 (of 6) — Writer: Jonathan Ross;  Art: Bryan Hitch Ross is the former British talk-show host who’s a big comics geek, and has dabbled in writing them before (Turf, about Prohibition-era vampires, came out a year or two ago). Here, he’s snagged Bryan Hitch as artist, which helps his cause considerably. The comic itself is nakedly commercial: it’s a mashup of J. Sergio Aragones Funnies #2 — Writer/Artist: Guess who Just as entertaining, wide-ranging and well-produced as the first issue, with a combination of the one-page gags that Mad readers are so familiar with, plus a trio of longer (five and seven pages) stories, including a fascinating autobiographical piece about the first time the schoolchild Sergio ever got paid for his drawing; like the other longer works, it’s colored by Groo‘s Tom Luth, and looks wonderful.
