The Latest and Mostly Greatest #17 by Dan!

I’m writing these on a Friday, whoa! Stuff on time! Let’s do this! My Top 5 (The 5 Best Comics of the Week) Amazing Spider-Man #655 Writer: Dan Slott Artist: Marcos Martin Yup, I’m on the bandwagon for this issue. It’s been going around the “internets” (as dear Dubya once said) that this is some big special fantastic issue, and holy crap it is.  Look, all you need to know is that Dan Slott really loves writing Spider-Man and Marcos Martin draws the hell out of it.  With the recent death of J. Jonah Jameson’s wife, this is a first … Continue reading

Fresh Eyes on Old Books #15 by Dan!

And we’re back!  This week will be a special “dead Marvel characters” week at Fresh Eyes, so let’s see what I picked out.  Oh! Spoilers ahead, don’t forget that. Strange Tales #105 from 1962 There’s nothing quite like a book where all the main good guys and bad guys do is narrate at each other.  “I’m doing this!” “Well, I’m doing this which leads to this!”  If people actually talked like this, I think we’d all be in a much better place, free of sarcasm and snark.  The main story is all about the Human Torch in his huge battle … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #15 by Dan!

All right folks!  It was a seriously huge week, so let’s get down to business! My Top 5 (The 5 Best Comics of the Week) Fantastic Four #587 Writer: Jonathan Hickman, Artist: Steve Epting I am shocked.  I really have not cared about the Hickman FF run at all.  I found it boring, pretentious and convoluted.  Then the last six pages of this issue happened.  I know that you’ve probably all heard about the death, but I don’t feel like spoiling it.  Just know that it was in a super bad-ass take no prisoners, kicking and screaming kinda way, adding … Continue reading

Fresh Eyes on Old Books #10 by Dan!

Now it’s time for me to read some more old stuff and use excessive amounts of exclamation points!!! Let’s! Do! This! Fantastic Four #64 from 1967 This is a Kirby comic.  There’s no better way to describe what comes from this issue.  A combination of weird blocky robots, the Fantastic Four being fantastic, and the Inhumans lead to an exact representation of what Jack Kirby did for the medium.  It has the main evidence of Kirby’s styles in the huge drawings of machinery, Kirby dots, and big splash pages of action.  Not to mention that it’s a lot of fun.  … Continue reading

It Came From the Back Room #9

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed (especially with the school year now in full gear), this amounts to a two-year project. I’m currently on the Marvel “M” stuff, and here are some of the titles I’ve been encountering: Marvel Tales: This, of course, is the Spider-Man reprint book, and as such offers a cheap alternative to otherwise-expensive back issues. That sales point is less critical today (in our brave … Continue reading
