It Came From the Back Room #35
Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items (these are featured at the discount racks at the west end of the store for two weeks after each post, and then go to the discount racks on the east end of the store for a few weeks, and then disappear into our warehouses, so get them while you can). I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed (especially with the school semester in full gear), this amounts to a two-year … Continue reading

Fresh Eyes on Old Books #34 by Dan!
And we’re back! I’m taking a break from the bizarre-ness of the Cardinals game (we all know they’re going to lose) to bring you this new round of comics reviews. Let’s do this! Green Lantern #40 from 1965 So this is one of the first crossovers between Earth 1 and Earth 2. It’s… interesting. This gives an entire origin to the Guardians that involves a character named Krona. They basically punished Krona for trying to figure out where they came from. Basically, they banished him from existence for trying to learn about history. The Guardians have always been a bunch … Continue reading

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed (especially with the school semester in full gear), this amounts to a two-year project. This week, the focus continues to be on the letter “F,” and on discount comics featuring a series that Marvel has frequently billed as “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine” — the Fantastic Four. Fantastic Four — Volume One The FF was Marvel’s first Silver Age superhero book, of course, … Continue reading

Fresh Eyes on Old Books #29
All right folks, I’m taking a break from all my excessive TV watching to bring you my latest round of read-ups. Here it comes folks… let’s do this! Doctor Strange #172 from 1968 It’s Eternity vs Dormammu in a pretty ridiculously sweet issue of Dr. Strange. And holy crap is this thing pretty! What’s most important about Dr. Strange comics is how the astral word is presented, and it’s clear that Gene Colan always had a solid ability to show fight scenes, design characters, and make things interesting. It’s without a doubt one of the prettiest comics I’ve read while … Continue reading
The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #27
This was a pretty good week folks, full of hits and misses all over the place. So let us reel some of these out and judge them accordingly! Ultimate Fallout: Spider-Man No More #1 (of 6) Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Mark Bagley Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates Writer: Mark Millar Artist: Leinil Yu/Stephen Segovia The Ultimate Universe has its fair share of problems, but every once in a while Bendis can write a sick comic, and that’s the case here. Everyone has their own character moment of reacting to the new Spider-Man; things get shaken up and “nothing will … Continue reading
