Fresh Eyes on Old Books #26

All right folks, brought to you live (with slight tape delay) from Brookbank Canyon Ranch in northeast Arizona, I give you my reviews!  I’m taking a step away from the ranch life to give you folks exactly what you want.  Let’s do this! Ghost Rider #5 from 1974 There’s nothing quite like reading the phrase “swears to you on the name of the almighty Satan” when you’re surrounded by strict conservative religious family members. But that’s what you get when you’re dealing with Ghost Rider. Johnny Storm has to save his love interest (with old school Marvel, names aren’t that … Continue reading

Fresh Eyes on Old Books #21

Another day, another review of pure 60’s insanity.  Let’s do this! Action Comics # 318 from 1964 So apparently there’s a planet named Lexor that absolutely worships Lex Luthor… news to me!  Luthor attempts to return to it by sleeping on a cot in a spaceship (you heard me), and it totally works.  He, obviously, has the entire planet turned against Supey and that makes things extremely difficult when Superman comes to the planet to get him back.  Superman punches Lex in the face so hard he dies, again not kidding, so he’s put on trial for the murder of … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #19

Mix him with Geof Darrow, and you get yourself some Burnham.  It’s so freakin’ pretty to look at.  Because we’re only four issues into Morrison’s “grand … Continue reading

It Came From the Back Room #17

Dwayne McDuffie died last week, on February 21. He was a co-founder of Milestone Comics, and animation producer of Static Shock, Justice League Unlimited and Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, but in addition he was an admirable writer of comic books. This week, instead of the usual back-room letter-J stuff, I pulled some of his best work for the cover-price racks. Damage Control McDuffie was working as an assistant editor at Marvel in the late ’80s when he came up with this concept: a comic focusing on the guys who clean up after superhero fights, repairing all the damage, sweeping up the … Continue reading
