Fresh Eyes on Old Books #7 by Dan

It’s an all-DC special today.  We have three interesting comics to look at.  Let’s do this! The Spectre #1 from 1967: Seriously.  This issue is all about the Spectre fighting the astral form of a pirate hopping through time to try to be the richest and most powerful man ever.  I am not clever enough to think of an idea like that.  It’s a cross between the spooky ideas of the Spectre and pirate stuff.  I just don’t know how I feel about it.  It was so completely bizarre and full of bright colors and jumping around time and sword … Continue reading

It Came From The Back Room #7

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed (especially with the school year now in full gear), this amounts to a two-year project. I’m currently on the Marvel “M” stuff, and here are some of the titles I’ve been encountering: Marvel Universe (Official Handbook of the…) Most of the overstock we have on these are from the two ’80s collections. There was a time when every true Marvel zombie just had … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #7 by Dan!

It’s been a long week Ladies and Gentlemen, but comics make everything better! My Top Five (The Five Best Comics of the Week) The Boys #47 Writer: Garth Ennis Artist: Russ Braun Dear god.  Everything between Annie and Hughie comes to a head this issue, and we as readers get a special treat.  Ennis is always at his strongest with character development, and it’s easy to forget that when he uses fart jokes all the time to hide it.  The conversations feel completely accurate and real (except I haven’t heard anyone say “the c-word” that much) and it’s clearly helped … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #180

Casanova #3 — Writer: Matt Fraction;  Art: Gabriel Ba Even though this is still reprinting previous issues, very few of you saw the originals, so it’s worth getting into now (especially with new stories promised after the repeats finish). Fraction’s in Michael Moorcock/Jerry Cornelius mode here, with time travel, flashy narrative techniques, suave spy stuff and hallucinogenic head games, and Ba’s one of the few artists able to keep up with him and make it all sing. Great stuff, and made even better by Fraction’s essays in each issue — this one, especially, where he gets very personal, practically pays … Continue reading

It Came From the Back Room #6

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed (especially with the school year now in full gear), this amounts to a two-year project. I’ve currently started on the Marvel and DC “M” stuff.  Here are some of the titles I’ve been encountering: DC: Milestone Comics Milestone was an early-’90s attempt to increase diversity in superhero comics, both among their characters and their creators. Its four founders — Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, … Continue reading
