Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #267

The Shadow: Midnight in Moscow #1 (of 6) — Writer/Artist: Howard Chaykin The Shadow’s one of those classic characters who attracts creators — Denny O’Neil and Michael Kaluta in the ’70s, and Chaykin himself in the ’80s — who see him as an effective springboard for slam-bang pulp adventure. This story’s set in 1949, a period whose fashions and people Chaykin has always loved to draw (Satellite Sam, his other current work, is set the same era — and written by Matt Fraction, who knows full well how to keep his artists happy), and watching him set up his plot, craft … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #94

All right folks. We’re back with a bunch of new comics and a big ol’ week of books. Let’s do this. Moon Knight #1 Writer: Warren Ellis Artist: Declan Shalvey So you’d think I would love this book if only because Ellis is writing it, but it goes way beyond that. Ellis take on Moon Knight is as quality as you’d expect it to be, but it’s Shalvey’s art and Jordie Bellaire’s coloring (or lack thereof) that make this book easily stand out as the best of the week. I think they chose to not even color in any part … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #258

Let’s start with the Marvel output this week, since there are a couple of new first issues: Ms. Marvel #1 — Writer: G. Willow Wilson;  Art: Adrian Alphona This one’s gotten some press coverage, since the title character, Kamala, is a 16-year-old daughter of Pakistani immigrants, and a Muslim. Wilson does a good job of making her a normal kid; she hangs out at the Marvel equivalent of a Circle K with a couple of friends before school, writes Avengers fanfic, fights with her parents about wanting to go to parties with boys, sneaks out to do it, and then a … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #86 by Dan!

All right folks we’re back! It’s another great week of comics with plenty worth talking about. Let’s do this! Letter 44 #1 Writer: Charles Soule Artist: Alberto Jimenez Alburquerque This new comic is probably the most interesting thing to come out this week. A new president takes office and right before his inauguration, he reads a letter left by his predecessor. Apparently something was found out in space and it is building stuff out in space and the previous president did everything he could to learn about it, regardless of what it did to the American people. The new president … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #85 by Dan

All right, we’re back! This week, no villains covers. Looks like I have about 500 less words to write. Let’s do this!   Lazarus #4 Writer: Greg Rucka Artist: Michael Lark In this issue, moving pieces finally create some actual results and consequences of the actions. Forever Carlyle (our protagonist) has to deal with her brothers actions and what he’s doing to her family. It’s all been very high-concept, attempting to create all these different families amid the struggle to stay within a specific class. It’s a lot of fun, and this issue really ramps up the stakes. Everyone is … Continue reading
