The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #28

And just like that we’re back folks. I survived San Diego, and only lost a finger! (joke). Let’s do this. (head’s up, I didn’t review League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. That pretentious mess is not for me. ((cue internet explosion))) Secret Wariors 28 Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist: Alessandro Vitti So Secret Warriors comes to its logical conclusion with more of a whimper than you might expect. However, when you think about it in the long run, it’s not that unexpected. This title has been running along with its usual flair for the dramatic, so a subdued final issue is to be … Continue reading

It Came From the Back Room #27

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed, this amounts to a two-year project. This week, two titles are featured on the discount racks, one as part of the normal “G” sequence and one as a special. Let’s take that one first: Captain America These actually got put out a few weeks ago, but with the movie finally appearing this is a good time to cover them. Everyone has their own character moment of reacting to the new Spider-Man; things get shaken up and “nothing will … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #199

Ultimate Spider-Man #160 — Writer: Brian Michael Bendis;  Pencils: Mark Bagley; Inkers: Andy Lanning with Andrew Hennessy This comes in a bag, but considering the title it’s probably not a spoiler to say that, yes, there’s a death scene with the main character (of course, there was one in Superman #75, too, and we all know how that turned out, so…). Bendis and Bagley, who’ve worked on the title for eleven years (straight, for Bendis) do a good job with it; it’s an affecting end to the story, and one true to the themes that the book has covered since … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #20!

It’s been twenty of these; have I become any better?  Read on to find out! My Top 5 (The 5 Best Comics of the Week) Axe Cop #2 Writer: Malachai Nicolle Artist: Ethan Nicolle Written by a six-year-old and drawn by his thirty-year-old brother!  This comic is just as ridiculously rad as you think it would be.  There is literally, vikings fighting baseball players (a much more even fight than you’d think),  The people of the Uni-Smart World had their unicorn horns covered so they no longer had “magic unicorn powers.”  Originally a webcomic, this has translated almost perfectly to … Continue reading
