Amazing Fantasy #15

We just acquired a nice Silver Age collection of Marvel’s and DC’s from the 1962 to 1967 era, and with it, the Holy Grail of any Silver Age comic book collection, AMAZING FANTASY #15, featuring the 1st appearance of AMAZING SPIDERMAN! Front, back and centerfold scans can be viewed here. It’s really a nice looking key, with lots of integrity left. It’s also one of the tougher to grade keys we’ve had in some time, with this book falling somewhere in the nebulous region of Good+ 2.5 to G/VG 3.0. Here’s the condition breakdown: Original staples are completely adhered to … Continue reading

Fresh Eyes on Old Books #26

All right folks, brought to you live (with slight tape delay) from Brookbank Canyon Ranch in northeast Arizona, I give you my reviews!  I’m taking a step away from the ranch life to give you folks exactly what you want.  Let’s do this! Ghost Rider #5 from 1974 There’s nothing quite like reading the phrase “swears to you on the name of the almighty Satan” when you’re surrounded by strict conservative religious family members. But that’s what you get when you’re dealing with Ghost Rider. Johnny Storm has to save his love interest (with old school Marvel, names aren’t that … Continue reading

Fresh Eyes on Old Books #23

Round two!  I am rolling right through these things! Dr. Strange #179 from 1969 Ditko! Within the first page they let you know that this is a reprint. I think it’s a lot more fun when Stan Lee would actually call people out for being late and then force a reprint down the readers throats.  This is your fairly generic old-school Ditko Dr. Strange story.  The one thing that’s always worth noting about Ditko is how much he (at least seems) to have enjoyed drawing the backgrounds of the Astral Plane.  It’s like Stan Lee’s “script” said “screw with reality, … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #12 by Dan!

All right folks, it’s a Saturday morning, so you know what that means!  Review time! My Top Five (The Five Best Comics of the Week) Black Panther: The Man Without Fear #513 Writer: David Liss Artist: Francesco Francavilla This book was surprisingly awesome.  As was the case with Spider-man during “One More Day”, maybe Shadowland will lead to something much more fun.  Black Panther shows up fresh of his last failed series (has that been six?) to be a street level fighter on a quest for personal redemption.  He’s abandoned his family and kingdom to try to reconnect with the … Continue reading
