Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #320

Hoo boy — with Convergence done. you’d think there’d be a chance to relax in the early-summer heat (and, weirdly, rain), but instead we get nine Secret Wars books from Marvel, plus five DC first issues (and major turning-point episodes of Action and Justice League), along with the usual batch of cool indy stuff too. Let’s run them down: Secret Wars #3 (of 8) — Writer: Jonathan Hickman;  Art: Esad Ribic;  Colors: Ive Svorcina Secret Wars: Years of Future Past #1 (of 4) — Writer: Marguerite Bennett;  Art: Mike Norton;  Colors: FCO Plascencia Secret Wars: X-Tinction Agenda #1 (of 3) … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #295

Lots of good comics this week, so let’s break them down by company — starting with Image, who’s offered literally dozens of cool debuts this year, making themselves the destination publisher for creators who want to stretch their storytelling skills with minimum editorial interference, and maximum retention of the rights to their work: Bitch Planet #1 — Writer: Kelly Sue Deconnick;  Art: Valentine de Landro;  Colors: Cris Peter Deconnick’s been having a breakout 2014 — her Pretty Deadly, a hallucinatory occult Western, was great, and she’s been making Captain Marvel a smart, galaxy-spanning romp for Marvel. Here, she enters creator-owned … Continue reading

In this new series, he’s going for anthropomorphic high fantasy: on a world of intelligent animals, magic is dying, and their attempts to fix things have terrible consequences. Dewey has a lush, painterly style and a knack for structure … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #278

There weren’t quite as many good comics this week as in the last few months — summer is definitely starting to wind down — but still more than enough to make a decent reading pile. Let’s look… Captain Marvel #6 — Writer: Kelly Sue Deconnick;  Art: David Lopez This is the end of the book’s first arc, and it’s been a smart, stylish space story, with Carol helping the population of an oppressed planet against a seemingly-overwhelming military force (this issue’s scenes of an unarmed people protesting against heavily-armored authority figures echoes, quite by chance, recent events out of Missouri), … Continue reading
