Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #226

Walking Dead #100 — Writer: Robert Kirkman; Art: Charlie Adlard This is now officially the best-selling comic of the year, a tribute to both Kirkman’s storytelling skills and luck in catching the cultural zombie zeitgeist at just the right moment, and with just the right media tie-ins and collaborators. Eddie thought it was lazy — it provides just the kind of major-character death that you’d expect, and on top of that it’s got a lot of echoes from the earlier “Governor” storyline. That’s all true; on the other hand, you have to admire the way the brutal, low-tech nature of … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #225

Casanova: Avaritia #4 (of 4) — Writer: Matt Fraction; Art: Gabriel Ba Invincible Iron Man #519 — Writer: Matt Fraction; Art: Salvador Larroca Fraction’s career arc with critics sometimes reminds me of Bendis’s — people who liked him when he was new and different and an indie star now have a vague resentment for his mainstream success, and are tired of his various literary tics and fallbacks, leading to a lot of bitching about how he’s no good any more. Casanova is the antidote to that, his creator-owned book that (like Powers for Bendis) he’s kept up as a labor … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #224

Popeye #2 (of 4) — Writer: Roger Langridge; Art: Ken Wheaton and Tom Neely I raved about the first issue of this, and the second is just as good, although on a smaller scale — instead of an ocean quest and the Sea Hag, we get one of those neighborhood domestic comedies that Segar was so good at, with Popeye dealing with a rival for Olive’s affections (in one of the Easter eggs Langridge has sprinkled throughout the book, it turns out to be Willie Wormwood, the “actor” who played the Snidely Whiplash-like bad guys in Segar’s early, pre-Popeye versions of Thimble … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #223

Batman Incorporated #1 — Writer: Grant Morrison; Art: Chris Burnham After almost a year, it’s nice to have this back, and Morrison offers many of his old tricks: the first-page flash-forward, showing Bruce Wayne in a bad place; the vast conspiracies; the perspective switch to humanize one of the faceless minions; the shock ending; Batman and Damian and Talia and all the moves and counter-moves between Wayne’s forces and Leviathan’s: then, add the art, which is quite good at communicating the action, and looks Quitely-like in some of the expressions and poses (Morrison’s scripts have similar effects on his artists). … Continue reading

The Latest and Mostly Greatest #48 by Dan!

Hello again! In case you didn’t read Phil’s reviews of the Avengers movie, long story short: He’s right, it’s awesome, go see it already. Batman #9 Writer: Scott Snyder Artist: Greg Capullo This is exactly what a crossover should be. Every story is tied into the main story, and so far every tie-in has been better because of the main story. This is probably the first time I can say that tie-ins actually work with this type of story. Basically, the Court of Owls is set to destroy Gotham City and all the main people that help keep it going. … Continue reading
