Love and Rockets: New Stories #7 — Creators: Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez It’s hard to describe just how vital Love and Rockets and the Hernandez brothers were to comics in the ’80s: the magazine lasted for 50 issues over 14 years, from 1982 to 1996, and for a long span every new installment was a leap forward: you could just see them growing in confidence and ability, until both Gilbert’s Palomar stories (set in a Mexican village, with a large cast of characters but focusing mostly on the mayor, Luba, and her many daughters and lovers) and Jaime’s Locas ones … Continue reading

Crossed Plus One Hundred #1 — Writer: Alan Moore; Art: Gabriel Andrade; Colors: Digikore Studios A new series by Alan Moore is always cause for celebration, although here he’s playing in Garth Ennis’s zombie-apocalypse-ish Crossed sandbox, not creating something brand-new. As the title suggests, the story’s set in the medium-distant future, 100 years after the initial outbreak of a virulent infection that transformed its victims into homicidal maniacs and crashed civilization. Ultimate Fallout #4 (of 6) — Writers: Brian Michael Bendis, Jonathan Hickman, Nick Spencer; Art: Sara Pichelli, Salvador Larroca, Clayton Crain This is the book that features the debut of the new, multiracial Ultimate Spider-Man. It’s only eight pages (the other parts involve Ultimate Reed Richards escaping the negative zone, and Val Cooper talking to a reporter who’s about to break a big story), but it’s gotten Marvel all the publicity it could have hoped for. Flashpoint #3 (of 5) — Writer: Geoff Johns; Pencils: Andy Kubert; Inks: Sandra Hope This being the middle of five chapters, it’s the appropriate time for our lead character to regain his powers (by doing the exact same thing he did in the previous issue, only adding more… cowbell, or something), and try to get the JLA band back together — although, as it turns out, some of the members are in better shape than others.
