Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #277

Kick-Ass 3 # 8 (  of 8  ) — Writer: Mark Millar;  Pencils: John Romita Jr.;  Inks: Tom Palmer Millar has said previously that this issue is the end of both this mini-series and the entire Kick-Ass saga; he’s been coy about hinting that one or both of the main characters might not survive. I won’t play spoiler here, but I’ll say that it’s a satisfying conclusion, and has been his best sustained work (and certainly, if you go by publicity and movie deals, his most successful) — and that I actually cared whether the characters would live, one of … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #263

So far, this has been the year of the first issue, with lots of reboots, brand-new series and plain-old-relaunches almost every week. This time, we’ve got nine first issues to look at (and there were actually a few more than that I didn’t get to), so let’s start with the obvious best-seller: Batman Eternal #1 (of 52) — Story: Scott Snyder;  Script: James Tynion IV;  Consulting Writers: Ray Fawkes, John Layman and Tim Seeley;  Art: Jason Fabok DC isn’t stupid: if you want to sell more comics, take your top-selling book and create a one-year weekly comic about it, making … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #251

Astro City #1 — Writer: Kurt Busiek;  Art: Brent Anderson A new Astro City is always cause for celebration: Busiek and Anderson (plus Alex Ross on the covers) have been telling tales of this book’s title town for almost 20 years, and they’re always clever, human explorations of the superhero genre, packed with interesting characters and situations. Busiek’s been sick for the last few years, and unable to work on a comic as labor-intensive as this one — so the fact that this is a new ongoing series is good news, both for him and for us: check out the … Continue reading
