Fresh Eyes on Old Books #12 by Dan!

I’m taking a break from watching whatever the Cardinals are trying to do.  It sure isn’t playing football, but that’s the kind commentary I should save for a different blog.  Now, Comics! Defenders #6 from 1973 The Defenders are a team that has always surprised me.  They look like a poor-man’s Avengers team, consisting of throwaways that aren’t good enough for the main team.  But this title lasted over 150 issues, so do I really have any room to judge them?  It is a completely capable creative team in Steve Englehart and Sal Buscema.  It’s the kind of group that … Continue reading

It Came From the Back Room #11

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed (especially with the school year now in full gear), this amounts to a two-year project. I’m currently (and finally!) finishing the Marvel “M” stuff, and here’s the last title I’ve encountered: Marvel Comics Presents: MCP was started in mid-1988, and was a biweekly anthology series; it was likely a reaction to DC’s early-1988 move of Action Comics to a weekly anthology (no, kids, … Continue reading

It Came From the Back Room #10

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed (especially with the school year now in full gear), this amounts to a two-year project. I’m currently on the Marvel “M” stuff, and here are some of the titles I’ve been encountering: Marvel Premiere: This is one of those institutions peculiar to comics: the try-out book, which a company uses to publish a couple of issues of a new series, and, if sales … Continue reading

It Came From the Back Room #9

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed (especially with the school year now in full gear), this amounts to a two-year project. I’m currently on the Marvel “M” stuff, and here are some of the titles I’ve been encountering: Marvel Tales: This, of course, is the Spider-Man reprint book, and as such offers a cheap alternative to otherwise-expensive back issues. That sales point is less critical today (in our brave … Continue reading
