It Came From the Back Room #2

Quick Summary: I’m fulfilling my function of going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items, and I’m currently on the letter “N.” Here are some of the titles I’ve been encountering: Ninja High School is one of those long-lived but under-the-radar books, having been published by its writer/artist, Ben Dunn, for almost 25 years now. As its name implies, it’s a mashup of standard manga types — the alien princesses, the samurai warriors, the anthropomorphic entities, the title ninjas, etc. — in a high school setting. One … Continue reading

Fresh Eyes on Old Books #2 by Dan!

So here’s your second dose of my opinion of old stuff.  Yes, this stuff is much much older than I am, but on the internet, everyone gets an opinion! Iron Man #5 from 1968 I never get tired of Stan Lee.  Though this issue is written by Archie Goodwin, the effects of Lee’s editing run heavily throughout.  This issue is especially interesting because it supposedly takes place in a seperate reality, and by the end of it, Tony Stark is right back where he started.  So what does that mean?  Iron Man #5 didn’t even remotely worry about continuity or … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #2 by Dan!

After some much needed post-San Diego Comic-Con rest, I’m back for a HUGE week of comics.  Lots to talk about, and plenty to say, so here we go! My Top Five (The Five Best Comics of the Week) Time Lincoln: Fists of Fuhrer #1 Writer/Artist: Fred Perry I cannot stress this enough: Time Lincoln is awesome.  If you have any problems with Abraham Lincoln firing a laser gun at winged nazis to help get Ben Franklin to save Albert Einstein, then we can’t be friends.  To think that this is one guy doing all the work (both story and art) is … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #175

Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour — Writer/Artist: Bryan Lee O’Malley Yes, it’s a satisfying conclusion, and a cultural phenomenon, and about to be a movie — but don’t read this volume if you’ve never heard of it until now: it’s the sixth and last book of a series. Go get Scott Pilgrim #1, start there, and work up to the end. That way, you’ll get to see O’Malley develop over the six years it took to create this story (there’s a noticeable leap in storytelling ability with each of the first five books), and you’ll get to know and care for … Continue reading

It Came From the Back Room #1

So, as Dan mentioned last week, we’re changing up some of the columns here at AABC.  Mostly, the whole “Stuff I Read and Put Back” deal was, after three years, getting old — too many mediocre comics, without much to say about them. Better to have one set of “new” reviews each week, and concentrate on the good stuff, while saving the mockery for just the two or three books bad enough to deserve it. That only accounts for one column a week, though. What to do for another? Well, as most of you know, my function at the store … Continue reading
