Punisher Max: The Platoon #1 (of 6) — Writer: Garth Ennis;  Art: Goran Parlov;  Colors: Jordie Bellaire Spirits Of Vengeance #1 — Writer: Victor Gischler;  Art: David Baldeon;  Colors: Andres Mossa Of the two new Marvel books this week, Punisher: Platoon is the most welcome: a return of Garth Ennis and Goran Parlov, who had a decade-long run on that character that most critics consider the best in his forty-year-plus history. It’s a prequel to Punisher: Born, which was itself a prequel to the main Punisher title, looking at Frank Castle in Vietnam on the tour of duty just before … Continue reading

Marvel 75th Anniversary Celebration #1 — Creators: Various These anniversary packages can be a drag sometimes, with too much self-importance and congratulation weighing things down, but this one gets it right: it starts with a James Robinson/Chris Samnee story about the day the FF went up in that rocket and kickstarted the Marvel Silver Age, focusing not on the event but on what a bunch of other characters were doing at the same time; it’s jammed with little bits of continuity and Easter eggs, and… well, come on, it’s Samnee art, and it’s a great opener. Then, Bruce Timm illustrates … Continue reading

Rocket Raccoon #1 — Writer/Artist: Skottie Young Legendary Star-Lord #1 — Writer: Sam Humphries;  Pencils: Paco Medina;  Inks: Juan Vlasco Marvel’s milking their Guardians of the Galaxy franchise hard, with two new ongoing series starring individual members out this week, but they’re doing a good job of it — both books are worth a look. Rocket Raccoon is the best of the two, because Young’s art is such a wonder: fans know him from his “little kid” alternate covers to a bunch of Marvel titles over the last few years, and from his work on the various Oz books, and … Continue reading

This story’s set in 1949, a period whose fashions and people Chaykin has always loved to draw (Satellite Sam, his other current work, is set the same era — and written by Matt Fraction, who knows full well how to keep his artists happy), and watching him set up his plot, craft … Continue reading
