Justice League: Rebirth #1 — Writer/Penciler: Brian Hitch; Inks: Daniel Henriques with Scott Hanna; Colors: Alex Sinclair The Flintstones #1 — Writer: Mark Russell; Art: Steve Pugh; Colors: Chris Chuckry Loads of second issues from DC this week, but only a few first ones: Justice League: Rebirth is basically “New Superman joins the Justice League while they’re fighting a super-big threat”; it does its job of introducing the current versions of all the heroes, and of course Hitch makes them look like a twelve-year-old comics fan’s dream, although you have to squint a little to ignore the thin plot (it’s … Continue reading

Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat #4 — Writer: Kate Leth; Art: Brittney L. Williams; Colors: Megan Wilson Angela, Queen of Hel #6 (of 7) — Writer: Marguerite Bennett; Art: Kim Jacinto; Colors: Israel Silva The Infinity Entity #3 (of 4) — Writer: Jim Starlin; Pencils: Alan Davis; Inks: Mark Farmer; Colors: Wil Quintana Hawkeye #5 — Writer: Jeff Lemire; Art: Ramon Perez; Colors: Ian Herring with Ramon Perez I’ve really been liking Hellcat, with its breezy cartoony style and script that manage to acknowledge both the Stan Lee/Dan Decarlo Millie the Model days and the character’s superhero history since. Naturally, since … Continue reading

Love and Rockets: New Stories #8 — Creators: Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez This yearly dose of new Hernandez Brothers’ work is always cause for celebration — very few creators can say they’ve been chronicling their creations’ lives for thirty years, aging them in real time (you’d have to go to daily newspaper strips like Gasoline Alley or For Better or for Worse to see anything similar, and neither of those is still publishing new material), and both brothers are still capable of tremendous storytelling. Gilbert’s the more operatic, as the many descendants of his Palomar character Luba follow film careers … Continue reading
