The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Terror #17 — Creators: Zander Cannon, Gene Ha, Jane Wiedlin, Tom Hodges, Jim Woodring Hallowe’en comics already? Well, yes… October’s beginning next week, and Safeway already has pumpkins out, so it must be time for the Simpsons’ annual gift to alt-comics fans. Woodring’s the most stellar creator in display here, and his offering, a tribute to sleazy off-brand ’50s horror comics, is great fun. So too for the Cannon/Ha contribution that leads off the book, a beautifully-drawn homage to Nosferatu, the 1922 silent movie that was the first vampire film. Before we get to all those DC first issues, though, there are a few other comics that deserve your attention: Casanova: Avaritia #1 (of 6) — Writer: Matt Fraction; Art: Gabriel Ba Marvel’s Icon imprint having re-presented the earlier issues of this, Fraction’s indy manifesto, we now get the first new story, in color. Batman Incorporated #8 — Writer: Grant Morrison; Art: Scott Clark with Dave Beaty Bruce Wayne is showing off his “Internet 3.0” to a bunch of super-rich investors via virtual reality, and cyberterrorists attack, so he and Oracle team up to kick their digital butts. Very very cool graphics, typically dense Morrison concepts (sample dialog from page two: “The city of numbers is on fire!
