The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #69 by Dan!

Down to the wire this week folks! No excuses, just remember to do your taxes. Let’s do this! Age of Ultron #1 Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Bryan Hitch Well, this “big new event” sure starts off as a very pretty piece of mediocrity. The only person who has seen any advantage from Marvel’s recent “Ship-it-faster-than-we-can-write-it” strategy is Bendis, because his slow pace works better when read in chunks. This will (hopefully) be the case with Age of Ultron, because I have no idea what’s going on in this first issue. We’re given an alternate timeline called “Now” where Ultron … Continue reading

The Latest and Mostly Greatest #46 by Dan!

Game on folks, let’s make this quick! I have a baseball game to go see! The Boys #65 Writer: Garth Ennis Artist: Russ Braun Holy moses.. this comic! Ennis took about six pages to explain everything you needed to know about the situation between Hughie, Black Noir, Homelander and Butcher. Six pages! And it all made perfect sense; it made we want to re-read 64 other issues, and it basically blew me away. Not to mention the fact that Russ Braun has really made his mark on this title. I’m still a bit bummed that Darick Robertson wasn’t around to … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #35 by Dan

Oh no! Bet you didn’t expect me back so soon. Outside circumstances are giving you a double dose of Dan two weeks in a row, so let’s do this! Uncanny X-men #1 Writer: Kieron Gillen Artist: Carlos Pacheco: This is what you should be doing with the X book. It’s not some wacky-art tour like Wolverine was, it’s a fair intro to the characters that has a big ol’ bad guy to fight. Very good stuff. Shame Itself #1: Writer/Artist: Various: There’s a lot to like about this comedy anthology one-shot. It’s fun stuff that’s very self-criticizing. It’s got a … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #207

Casanova: Avaritia #2 (of 6) — Writer: Matt Fraction;  Art: Gabriel Ba What if you worked for a multiversal spy organization and had to go around blowing up alternate realities where the Nazis had taken over? What if, having gotten tired of destroying entire timelines, you realized that just killing the Hitler of each one — before he took power and became “Hitler” — would work instead? What if, having killed a bunch of those alternate-timeline young Hitlers (who, after all, hadn’t done anything crazy or wrong yet, and were mostly just creative-but-failed artists scuffling to get by), you started … Continue reading

Phil’s reviews — Stuff I Bought #205

Lots of books this week, kids, so let’s do short reviews on each one. Before we get to all those DC first issues, though, there are a few other comics that deserve your attention: Casanova: Avaritia #1 (of 6) — Writer: Matt Fraction;  Art: Gabriel Ba Marvel’s Icon imprint having re-presented the earlier issues of this, Fraction’s indy manifesto, we now get the first new story, in color. Cutting-edge in both the visuals and the plotting, with freeze-frames, multiversal dimensional destruction, and lots of intriguing pretty people, this makes more sense if you’re already familiar with the characters, but if … Continue reading
