Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #421

Secret Empire #2 (of 10) — Writer: Nick Spencer;  Art/Colors: Andrea Sorrentino with Rod Reis Luke Cage #1 — Writer: David F. Walker;  Art: Nelson Blake II;  Colors: Marcio Menyz Generation X #1 — Writer: Christina Strain;  Art: Amilcar Pinna;  Colors: Felipe Sobreiro Nick Fury #2 — Writer: James Robinson;  Pencils: ACO;  Inks: Hugo Petrus;  Colors: Rachelle Rosenberg I like the way Secret Empire just jumps to the hope-is-all-gone stage of its Hydra takeover of the US, rather than wasting our time with set-up, and Sorrentino’s and Reis’s moody, dimly-lit art and imaginative page design set just the right tone and … Continue reading

Secret Empire #0 ( of 9 ) — Writer: Nick Spencer;  Art/Colors: Daniel Acuna Steve Rogers: Captain America #16 — Writer: Nick Spencer;  Art: Kevin Libranda, Yildiray Cinar and Jon Malin;  Colors: Rachelle Rosenberg Thunderbolts #12 — Writer: Jim Zub;  Art: Jon Malin;  Colors: Matt Yackey U.S.Avengers #5 — Writer: Al Ewing;  Art: Paco Diaz;  Colors: Jesus Aburtov Whether we all really want to read about a fascist takeover of the U.S. by a nationalist-themed sociopath and his cartoonish super-villain flunkies right now is a good question, especially in a ten-episode mini-series with line-wide tie-ins, but as such things go … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #77 by Dan!

All right folks, I’ve been complaining lately about the weeks that I’ve been doing reviews, but this is NOT one of those weeks. This week was a monster with lots to talk about. Let’s do this! Batman/Superman #1 Writer: Greg Pak Artists: Jae Lee & Ben Oliver I never have hope for weird team-ups like this, but I gave it a shot cause Pak often delivers. And boy does this comic deliver! While Lee’s style has changed a lot over the years, it fits almost perfectly with what’s going on here. The overall story is that some thing is possessing … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #63 by Dan

Ya’ know… only 170 more of these and I’ll catch up to Phil… sigh. Let’s do this! Thunderbolts #1 Writer: Daniel Way Artist: Steve Dillon This introduction to the all-new Thunderbolts is your traditional team-building first issue, but laid out in a different way. The Punisher is tied up with a collection of mobsters ready to close in, as General Ross gives him a very lopsided ultimatum. There’s info about every single character put into place in a pretty violent way, and I can only imagine the dark twisted pieces of this comic will not disappoint. It’s like the early … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #49 by Dan!

What’s this?! Two weeks in a row!? How dare I… Yup that’s right, Phil’s out this week, so you’re getting a good-ol’ fashioned double-dose of Dan. Let’s do this! Fury Max #2 Writer: Garth Ennis Artist: Goran Parlov Hey! Remember all those reasons you like Garth Ennis comics? And remember how you think when he resorts to fart jokes you find yourself just a little disappointed cuz’ you know he can do better? Well, this right here is where he does better. It’s Ennis telling a straight-up war story, with Nick Fury acting as any of a million different war characters you’ve … Continue reading
