Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #221

Popeye #1 (of 4) — Writer: Roger Langridge;  Art: Bruce Ozella Snarked #7 — Writer/Artist: Roger Langridge Back in the ’70s, when I was first discovering America’s long, rich history of newspaper comics, E. C. Segar’s Thimble Theater, the strip that birthed Popeye in 1928, was one of my first encounters, and it was a revelation: tough, funny, adventurous and told with a sureness of line and vision that puts it in the top ten of everybody’s best-of lists. This new comic doesn’t reach that peak, but it comes closer than anyone else has since Segar’s death in 1938: Ozella … Continue reading

Avengers Vs. X-Men #0 — Writers: Brian Michael Bendis and Jason Aaron; Art: Frank Cho Bendis provides a Scarlet Witch story wherein Wanda (a) fights M.O.D.O.K., (b) talks to Carol Danvers, who convinces her to go to Avengers Mansion, and (c) actually goes to said mansion, wherein she meets the Vision (it’s a good idea to read Avengers #24.1 before this book, if you’re wondering what the Vision is doing there and why he acts the way he does), and things don’t go well. The Cho art is fun to look at, in its mildly cheesecakey way, and the story … Continue reading

Daredevil #8 — Writer: Mark Waid;  Art: Kano DD continues to be a bright spot among the Marvel books — literally, since its pages are splashed with lots of reds, blues and other primary colors. That gives it a unique look (even when a different artist is drawing it, as here, although Kano turns out to be a good match for the previous pencillers), and suits its sunny, optimistic stories. This issue, the second part of a crossover with Amazing Spider-Man, features Spidey, DD and the Black Cat battling bad guys (and sometimes each other), and ends with an intriguing … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #211

The Defenders #1 — Writer: Matt Fraction;  Penciller: Terry Dodson;  Inker: Rachel Dodson This is Marvel’s latest attempt to revive this franchise, a best-seller in the ’70s and ’80s but not particularly successful since then, and Fraction’s using leftover plotlines from Fear Itself to do it (specifically, the Nul character who possessed the Hulk, now loose in our world and threatening to break the universe). The core group of Dr. Strange, Silver Surfer and Namor are there, with the Red She-Hulk substituting for Bruce Banner, and Iron Fist thrown in (presumably because Fraction likes writing him). As with Iron Man … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #22

So it’s almost Free Comic Book Day.  Are you prepared? Are you SURE?  Well, here’s some reviews to settle you down before the brouhaha. My Top 5 (The 5 Best Comics of The Week) Moon Knight #1 Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Alex Maleev So here’s the deal.  I saw this and went “Wow! Maleev actually isn’t photo-referencing! This looks hand-drawn, but it doesn’t look quite right.”  Then a very aware customer (I’m lookin’ at you Jeff) says “You know, it’s a tribute style to Bill Sienkiewicz” and my mind was blown.  This book is absolutely great.  And the new … Continue reading
