The Latest and (Mostly) Greats #64 by Dan!

Hey guys! Two weeks in a row! Don’t worry, you’ll be sick of me about halfway through this thing. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #17 Writer: Tom Waltz Artist: Ben Bates I feel like I’ve said this a bunch of times, but IDW’s reboot of the TMNT franchise is phenomenal! And as a guy with just barely too much time on his hands, I’ve been watching the 80’s cartoon, and catching up to what’s going on here. Obviously, this is going to be a bit darker and more intense (only slightly less pizza) but updating these characters to work in a … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #63 by Dan

Ya’ know… only 170 more of these and I’ll catch up to Phil… sigh. Let’s do this! Thunderbolts #1 Writer: Daniel Way Artist: Steve Dillon This introduction to the all-new Thunderbolts is your traditional team-building first issue, but laid out in a different way. The Punisher is tied up with a collection of mobsters ready to close in, as General Ross gives him a very lopsided ultimatum. There’s info about every single character put into place in a pretty violent way, and I can only imagine the dark twisted pieces of this comic will not disappoint. It’s like the early … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #237

All-New X-Men #2 — Writer: Brian Michael Bendis;  Pencils: Stuart Immonen;  Inks: Wade von Grawbadger New Avengers #34 — Writer: Brian Michael Bendis;  Art: Mike Deodato Two by Bendis, a beginning and an ending. The X-Men is the second issue, and after all the set-up of the first it actually takes off and offers an intriguing look at the teenage X-Men, brought from the past by a dying Beast to try to talk sense into the current Scott Summers. This is the very definition of “high concept,” of course, but, eye-rolling aside, it works very well — what fan can … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #236

The Boys #72 — Writer: Garth Ennis;  Art: Darick Robertson with Richard P. Clark The last issue of Ennis’s longest complete story since Preacher (he wrote more issues of Punisher, but that had no conclusion). Like Preacher, most of the action took place in the penultimate issue, leaving this one for codas, cleanup and relationship resolutions (at least, of those characters who are still alive), and while it’s hard to say much about it without spoilers, it’s nice to have Robertson back for the ending (although Russ Braun, who actually drew more issues, deserves at least a shout-out somewhere here), and … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #61 by Dan!

All right folks, it’s a big week with lots of things worth noting, so why not check out some of the best (and possibly worst) of the week. Let’s do this! Deadpool #1 Writers: Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan Artist: Tony Moore This is a book full of political assassination jokes; do you need to know anything else? You do? Oh…Well, alt-comedian Posehn’s dark comedy style is clearly injected into this piece and that makes it surprisingly hilarious. Where Daniel Way was relying on the multiple narrators in Deadpool’s head to crack all the jokes, Posehn and Duggan put them … Continue reading
