Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #245

Age of Ultron #2 ( of 8 ) — Writer: Brian Michael Bendis;  Pencils: Brian Hitch;  Inks: Paul Neary Uncanny X-Men #3 — Writer: Brian Michael Bendis;  Pencils: Chris Bachalo;  Inks: Tim Townsend, Jaime Mendoza, Al Vey and Victor Olazara First, for a story set in an Ultron-destroyed New York, Age Of  is a very pretty book — all the little bits of rubble are lovingly drawn, while the desperate human refugees look unfailingly handsome; even a reveal of Black Widow’s injured face looks oddly attractive: this is what happens when you get Bryan Hitch to draw your comic. When you get … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #69 by Dan!

Down to the wire this week folks! No excuses, just remember to do your taxes. Let’s do this! Age of Ultron #1 Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Bryan Hitch Well, this “big new event” sure starts off as a very pretty piece of mediocrity. The only person who has seen any advantage from Marvel’s recent “Ship-it-faster-than-we-can-write-it” strategy is Bendis, because his slow pace works better when read in chunks. This will (hopefully) be the case with Age of Ultron, because I have no idea what’s going on in this first issue. We’re given an alternate timeline called “Now” where Ultron … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #68 by Dan!

All right folks, I’m back in action! It’s time for another round of “I don’t know what to say, just buy it!” Let’s do this! Star Wars #2 Writer: Brian Wood Artist: Carlos D’Anda So this book is shockingly good, but then when you stop and think about the team involved in it, it begins to make more sense. Set between Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, we all know where the story is going to lead, but the actual telling of it is what matters, and with that, Wood knocks it out of the park! D’anda’s got one of … Continue reading

All right folks, we’re back! There’s a fair amount to cover this week. Let’s do this! Mara #2 Writer: Brian Wood Artist: Ming Doyle How to explain this comic… A strange future world where armies are still fighting, but everyone loves watching girls volleyball to the point that they are complete superstars. One star (our title character), has shined above the rest, but something isn’t quite right… this is the follow-up from the previous issue where everyone seems to think Mara is now cheating, and she is not taking it well. Doyle is drawing solid action scenes where everything makes … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #66 by Dan!

Another week, another set of reviews where I use the same adjective repeatedly. Let’s do this! The Black Beetle #1 Writer/Artist: Francesco Francavilla So yeah, I knew this was going to be incredibly sweet based purely on the fact that it was Francavilla doing what he wants. His art style is almost like a noir-cartoon and it’s some of the best that you’re going to find on the comic book stands. So far, in the two issues that have come out of this series, Francavilla has also shown that he can put together a coherent mystery that leaves the reader … Continue reading
