Amazing Spider-Man #1 — Writer: Dan Slott;  Art: Humberto Ramos;  Inks: Victor Olazaba So, the odds of Marvel releasing a new Spider-Man #1, with Peter Parker back to normal, 24 hours before the debut of the new Spider-Man movie, were… 100%. Amazing! Canny, too — the editorial and creative teams deserve a lot of credit for taking the “old” Spidey away from us for so long, and building up anticipation for his return; I think we’ve all missed him. The Boys #72 — Writer: Garth Ennis;  Art: Darick Robertson with Richard P. Clark The last issue of Ennis’s longest complete story since Preacher (he wrote more issues of Punisher, but that had no conclusion). Like Preacher, most of the action took place in the penultimate issue, leaving this one for codas, cleanup and relationship resolutions (at least, of those characters who are still alive), and while it’s hard to say much about it without spoilers, it’s nice to have Robertson back for the ending (although Russ Braun, who actually drew more issues, deserves at least a shout-out somewhere here), and … Continue reading →

Liberty Annual 2012 — Creators: Various This is the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund’s annual moneyraising effort; they’re a First Amendment organization whose primary purpose is to defend comic book retailers (and publishers and creators) from legal challenges when some local parent or prosecutor decides that a comic is obscene. To a journalism major like me, that’s a noble goal; they’ve kept a lot of people out of jail (or from losing their stores) just because they sold someone a comic book. Props to DC for including a full-page “Who’s Who”-type entry in each book, by the way — that’s a good move, especially if you figure that each of these origin issues will attract some readers who aren’t that familiar with the main title. Rachel Rising #3 — Writer/Artist: Terry Moore We’re still in “set up the mystery” mode, as the title character, having clawed her way out of a shallow grave, exhibits spooky precog powers and watches bad things happen to other people. There’s some kind of possession thing going on, and it’s all very well staged, and drawn very prettily too. Echo, Moore’s last effort, was remarkably well thought out, so I trust that the eventual explanation here will be a lot of fun, and involve a lot of action.
