Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #295

Lots of good comics this week, so let’s break them down by company — starting with Image, who’s offered literally dozens of cool debuts this year, making themselves the destination publisher for creators who want to stretch their storytelling skills with minimum editorial interference, and maximum retention of the rights to their work: Bitch Planet #1 — Writer: Kelly Sue Deconnick; Art: Valentine de Landro; Colors: Cris Peter Deconnick’s been having a breakout 2014 — her Pretty Deadly, a hallucinatory occult Western, was great, and she’s been making Captain Marvel a smart, galaxy-spanning romp for Marvel. Here, she enters creator-owned … Continue reading

Madman In Your Face 3D Special! — Creator: Michael Allred; 3D Process: Christian LeBlanc When is a comic worth $10? When it’s this package: 80 pages of stunning 3D work, with glasses included. Allred is a wonderful artist anyway, and it turns out that his generous, open compositions make him a perfect candidate for the 3D separation process. He’s also a brainy creator with a vast knowledge of comics history: witness the first reprinted story here, “Swiped from Dimension X,” wherein every panel is drawn in the style of a different comics creator, from newspaper-strip legends like Elsie Segar and … Continue reading

Wonder Woman #36 — Writer: Meredith Finch; Pencils: David Finch; Inks: Richard Friend; Colors: Sonia Oback Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman #4 — (First Story) Creator: Gilbert Hernandez; Colors: John Rauch; (Second Story) Writer: Rob Williams; Art: Tom Lyle; Colors: Wendy Broome; (Third Story) Writer: Nick Kleid; Art: Dean Haspiel; Colors: Allen Passalaqua Two Wonder Woman books — the regular comic features the debut of a new husband-and-wife creative team, the Finches. It’s OK, although if you liked the previous version you might not be too thrilled; unlike Azzarello/Chiang’s quirky, angular work, this is decidedly mainstream, and looks a lot … Continue reading

The Wicked and the Divine #5 — Writer: Kieron Gillen; Art: Jamie McKelvie; Colors: Matthew Wilson This is a sharp-looking book — you could cut yourself on McKelvie’s precise, thin lines — and the theme’s about death and art, so it can be grim and gory (particularly so in one scene in this issue), but there’s also a warmth in both the words and the pictures, and a passionate humanity at its core that makes everything work. This issue concludes the first arc, and the last scene (which I assume will also be the end of the first trade) is … Continue reading

No more DC special animated covers, but we’re back to lots of first issues — significant debuts from Marvel, DC, Image and a few other companies too — so that should be more than enough to keep us busy: Thor #1 — Writer: Jason Aaron; Art: Russell Dauterman Marvel gets the most buzz on its new books this week, especially with this distaff version of one of their oldest characters. This isn’t quite a brand-new relaunch of the title (in the way, say, the new Batgirl completely changes the character’s setting, circumstances, creative team, etc.), since Aaron’s still the writer, … Continue reading
