Fresh Eye on Old Books #16 by Dan!

Well there’s lots of good stuff here. Let’s do this! Showcase #32 from 1961 You know, it’s good to go when the editor thinks it’s necessary to explain how Aquaman and Aqualad talk to each other under water. Oh the 1960s!… This issue is all about Aquaman fighting some giant creature created by a WIZARD From the Past (dun dun dunnnn…) That huge creature begins literally beating up all kinds of different animals throughout the sea (no seriously, he hits a whale shark with a funnel. The creature is trying to steal gold…yes, that’s literally all the plan is. It … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #16 by Dan!

Let’s do this! My Top 5 (The 5 Best Comics of the Week) SpongeBob Comics #1 Writer/Artists: Various Yes I am currently watching SpongeBob; why do you ask? I was a little surprised by a couple of things. First, I’m surprised this comic exists. Second, I’m surprised this comic wasn’t made much sooner. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed, this amounts to a two-year project. This week is brought to you by the letter “J”: Judge Dredd Joe Dredd, of Mega-City One, is a futuristic cop and a product of Great Britain, having first appeared in the British sf magazine 2000 A.D. in the late ’70s. Imagine a police force made up entirely of Clint Eastwood Dirty Harrys, all with the authority … Continue reading
Fresh Eyes on Old Books #15 by Dan!

And we’re back! This week will be a special “dead Marvel characters” week at Fresh Eyes, so let’s see what I picked out. Oh! Spoilers ahead, don’t forget that. Strange Tales #105 from 1962 There’s nothing quite like a book where all the main good guys and bad guys do is narrate at each other. “I’m doing this!” “Well, I’m doing this which leads to this!” If people actually talked like this, I think we’d all be in a much better place, free of sarcasm and snark. The main story is all about the Human Torch in his huge battle … Continue reading
